Three of the bigger pitching prospects on the farm, Zach Stewart, Asher Wojciechowski and Drew Hutchinson, were in action last night. Unfortunately, none of them picked up victories and their results ranged from mediocre to forgettable.
Las Vegas 3 @ Tacoma 4 – Boxscore
Mike MacDonald pitched 5 innings. MacDonald allowed 8 hits, 3 runs and a walk and with the Mariners 2001 2nd round pick, Mike Wilson, hitting a two-run homer off MacDonald. Sean Henn continued his hot form for the 51s, with three strikeouts over 2 scoreless innings. Winston Abreu came in for the 8th and promptly surrendered a homer to Alex Liddi, for what proved to be the winning run. Abreu took his 5th decision of the year, falling to 2-3, which is more decisions than he had all of last year or in 2009.
Leadoff batter Scott Podsednik went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI. He was followed by Brett Lawrie, who was 1-for-4 with a homer and his 7th stolen base of the year. Travis Snider was a disappointing 1-for-4, while cleanup hitter Dewayne Wise was also 1-for-4. Eric Thames was held hitless and, like Snider, struck out twice. Chris Woodward was 2-for-4 with a homer. Interestingly, Woodward was lifted for a pinch-runner, although he made two pinch-running appearances for the Jays during his short time on the roster. Ryan Shealy was hitless with a walk. He was lifted for pinch-hitter Adam Loewen, who got a hit during his one at-bat. Ryan Budde was also hitless, also drawing a walk. Jonathan Diaz was 1-for-4 with a double.
Binghamton 8 @ New Hampshire 1 – Boxscore
The Fisher Cats totaled 6 hits in the game, although no one had a multi-hit game. Every Fish Cat reached base but Darin Mastroianni, who was 0-for-5. Mark Sobolewski and Calix Crabbe were each also hitless, but Crabbe drew a walk and Sobolewski drew a pair. Anthony Gose had the only extra-base hit for New Hampshire, knocking a triple and scoring on a Moises Sierra groundout. Gose also drew a walk and displayed his strong arm by throwing a runner out at the home plate. Sierra and Adeiny Hechevarria each had a single and stole their fifth base of the season. Jack Murphy was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and Mike McDade and John Tolisano each also picked up a hit.
Zach Stewart had an outing to forget against the Mets. Over 5 innings, he allowed 10 hits and 5 runs, all earned. Stewart struck out a pair, but also walked two. Stewart had surrendered 5 earned runs over his previous four starts, totaling 25.1 innings. Clint Everts got through the 6th innings unscathed, but allowed 3 runs in the 7th without making it through the inning. Matt Daly pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, to lower his ERA to 7.07, although he walked three. Alan Farina pitched a scoreless 9th, striking out a pair.
Dunedin 0 @ Clearwater 4 – Boxscore
Asher Wojciechowski took the loss and his record evened out again at 2-2. Wojciechowski allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and a pair of walks. He allowed two in the first, but settled down and made it through the 4th. However, in the fifth inning, Wojciechowski allowed a 2-run homer with 2 out and Wojciechowski was out of the game at the end of the inning. Ryan Shropshire, relatively new acquisition Chris Malone and Aaron Loup each threw a scoreless inning of relief.
Philadelphia’s Julio Rodriguez improved to 5-0 with a 1.67 ERA as he held Dunedin scoreless over 7 innings. Rodriguez has now thrown at least 5 innings of shutout ball in 3 of his last 4 starts. Dunedin got 3 hits off Rodriguez and 2 off the Clearwater bullpen. Bradley Glenn led the offence with a 2-for-4 night. Kevin Ahrens knocked a double and Ryan Goins drew a walk, but was caught stealing. Brad McElroy and right fielder Justin Jackson each also had a single.
Lake County 6 @ Lansing 7 – Boxscore
Drew Hutchison served up 8 hits over 3 innings to the Captains’ lineup. Hutchison struck out 3 and walked a pair. He surrendered 6 runs, 4 earned, as Gustavo Pierre made his 19th error of the year and Carlos Perez made his first. Dayton Marze stepped in and held Lake County at bay with 4 innings of 1-hit relief with 5 strikeouts. Martze departed with Lansing holding the lead and turned the ball over to combination of Scott Gracey and Ross Turnbull. Gracey’s ERA sits at 0.51 over 17.2 innings after he held Lake County off the scoreboard with 2 strikeouts. Gracey has a 21/4 K/BB ratio and has allowed 7 hits and a solo homerun. Turnbull picked up his 9th save and now has a 1.64 ERA over 11 innings without having walked a batter.
Steven Wright, a 26-year-old Californian, started for Lake County and only allowed 2 runs over 6 frames. However, Lansing scored 5 runs off Owen Dew in the 7th to take the lead and reward Martze for his fine effort with a win. The middle infield combo of Pierre and Oscar Dominguez was kept off base, but every other Lugnut reached via a hit or a walk. Perez had 3 hits, including a double, scored a pair and knocked in a run. Leon Durham, Marcus Knecht and Balbino Fuenmayor each had a pair of base hits, with Knecht also drawing a walk, notching a double and driving in a run. Durham drove in 3 runs. Jake Marisnick had a hit, a walk and an RBI and Michael Crouse picked up a walk. Jonathan Jones was hitless in the leadoff spot, but he drew 3 walks and scored a pair of runs.
