Um, well, kind of. Two affiliates played in completely different Portlands, but got the same result: a win. A couple of rain-outs in Florida meant there were only four games last night.
Las Vegas 7 at Portland 6
Las Vegas scored seven runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, and the bullpen just barely held on to lead the 51s to a win. Sean Henn got the start and went four and a third innings, giving up four runs. Josh Roenicke and Jesse Carlson picked up the slack and got the ball to closer Jeremy Accardo without any more damage done, and Accardo decided to have some fun with the Beavers, letting them come tantalizingly close with a pair of runs in the ninth before slamming the door.
I regret to inform you that J.P. Arencibia did not homer. He did, however, single twice and walk once. Other 51s who had good days at the plate included Jarrett Hoffpauir and Brad Emaus, who both singled and walked twice, and Dan Perales, who doubled and tripled.
New Hampshire 5 at Portland 3
Across the country in the other Portland, Zach Stewart got the start and was quite good. He went seven innings, allowing two runs eight hits and two walks while striking out four. Tim Collins got the ball for a two-inning save, and held the Sea Dogs at bay, allowing three base-runners and striking out four.
The F-Cats' offense was slow and steady, scoring in the 2nd, 4th and 8th to account for their five runs. Adam Loewen and David Cooper, hitting out of the 5-6 spots, did most of the damage, each hitting a single, double and home run and driving in a pair. Loewen also walked, while Darin Mastroianni walked thrice.
Dunedin - postponed
Lake County 3 at Lansing 1
Lansing got off to a good start, with a run in the bottom of the first. They held that lead through five innings thanks to Dave Sever, but one run usually isn't enough, and this game was no exception. Sever tired in the 5th, allowing two doubles and uncorking a wild pitch before being replaced, but he still had a good start, striking out six against two walks in his five and a third.
Ryan Goins had the only day of note offensively, with a single, double, and walk.
Staten Island 11 at Auburn 6
It was a slugfest in Auburn, so the minor league update naturally includes good news for hitters and bad news for pitchers. Carlos Perez led the hitters with a single, double, walk, and three ribbies, and Marcus Knecht did the same thing with only one driven in. Lots of other Doubledays reached base more than once; Gustavo Pierre was the only starting position player who didn't reach once.
Daniel Webb, Juan Hernandez, Zach Anderson and Travis Garrett pitched, and let's not talk about them.
