Lansing defeated Cedar Rapids by a couple of runs and Dunedin’s ninth-inning comeback fell a run short. However, the real action on the evening came in Pennsylvania, where Zach Stewart faced off against Phillipe Aumont and 20 runs were scored in the game.
Fresno 6 @ Las Vegas 4 – Boxscore
After 5 innings Fresno was up 5-0 and they would not relinquish the lead, despite the 51s getting 3 back in the sixth. Reider Gonzalez started and threw 84 pitches over 6 innings. He gave up all six runs, one unearned on a Brad Emaus error, on nine hits and a walk with one strikeout. Josh Roenicke pitched two innings of relief and Zach Jackson got a pair of groundouts and a strikeout in the ninth.
Jorge Padilla and Luis Figueroa each had a pair of hits to lead the Las Vegas offence. Brett Wallace, Adam Calderone and Emaus were all hitless against Madison Bumgarner. Brian Dopirak, Chris Aguila, Jonathan Diaz and JP Arencibia each had one hit, with Dopirak and Aguila’s going for extra bases. Dopirak drove in a run, as did Aguila on his solo home run.
New Hampshire 15 @ Reading 5 - Boxscore
The trials and tribulations of Phillipe Aumont continued last night, as the highly touted Canadian prospect had another rough start for Reading. Aumont surrendered seven runs over 5 innings to fall to 1-6 with a 7.43 ERA. His potential notwithstanding, I wonder if Amaro sometimes looks longingly at pictures of Cliff Lee from last year. Over on the other side of the ledger, Zach Stewart, who has struggled somewhat this year, put together a very strong effort over 6 innings. Stewart struck out six, walked two and surrendered the single hit. Ronaldo Uviedo, newly acquired from the Pirates in the Dana Eveland trade, pitched 2 shutout innings and allowed three hits. Vincent Bongiovanni made the game closer than it appeared, by allowing four runs in the ninth on five hits and a walk.
Behind 18 hits New Hampshire ranked up 15 runs off Reading pitching and was up 7-0 after 2 innings. After 3 innings of no runs, New Hampshire scored 8 runs over the last four innings. Up and down the lineup everyone contributed, from leadoff hitter Calix Crabbe going 3-for-6 to the number eight hitter, Manny Mayorson, who was 2-for-5. Number nine hitter Brian Jeroloman was the only starter without a base hit, but he added two walks. The Fisher Cats attack was led by six home runs, one apiece from Eric Thames and David Cooper and a pair each from Adam Loewen and Dan Perales. Shawn Bowman continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-5 night and Jonathan Jaspe was 3-for-5.
Dunedin 3 @ Fort Myers 4 – Boxscore
Dunedin’s bats were stifled by Daniel Osterbrook, who allowed one run on two hits over 6 innings. Osterbrook was touched in the sixth inning by Wellinton Ramirez for a solo home run. Then came a much tougher test than Dunedin usually faces, as rehabbing Twins pitcher Pat Neshek came in for an inning and struck out two. Dunedin’s other hits were picked up by Michael McDade, Yan Gomes and John Tolisano, while Tyler Pastornicky drew both of the club’s walks. Dunedin scored twice in the top of the ninth to cut the defecit to one, but with two out and the tying run, Tolisano, on third, Matt Liuzza flew out to end the game. With Dunedin being held to four hits, several members of the lineup, including Adeiny Hechavarria, were held hitless.
Andrew Liebel started for Dunedin and took the loss after not pitching well. Although he only gave up three earned runs, four runs, over 6 innings, Liebel didn’t pitch convincingly, walking four and surrendering nine hits. Frank Gailey and Alan Farina continue to find success this year, as Gailey went 2 shutout innings with four strikeouts and Farina escaped a couple of hits in the eighth.
Cedar Rapids 6 @ Lansing 8 – Boxscore
Ryan Shropshire started for Lansing and went 6 strong innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out three. Shropshire picked up his third victory of the year and lowered his ERA to 5.46. Nestor Molina came in out of the bullpen and went 2.1 innings. Molina didn’t have his best stuff and gave up seven hits against one strikeout. Cedar Rapids scored twice off him and Molina then departed with the bases loaded. Steve Turnbull came in to shut the door and allowed two more of Molina’s runners to score, before shutting the door to pick up his thirteenth save.
Ryan Goins and AJ Jimenez led the Lugnuts offence with three hits apiece. Goins scored and added an RBI while Jimenez drove in two runs. Ryan Schimpf also had a solid game from the leadoff spot, going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, two runs, a double and an RBI. Eric Eiland had one hit and scored a run, while Kenny Wilson was held hitless but added a run. Wilson also stole a base, his seventeenth, as did Jimenez, while Goins was caught stealing for the fifth time. Mark Sobolewski, Sean Ochinko and Bradley Glenn each had a hit and at least one RBI, with Ochinko scoring twice and Glenn driving home two runs and earning a walk.
DSL Rangers 3 @ DSL Blue Jays 0 (8 innings) – Boxscore
The DSL Blue Jays were held to four hits by the DSL Rangers. Fausto Natera hit a double and Leonardo Hernandez had half of the team’s hits and leads the team with a .429 average. Cesar Sanchez took the loss after giving up two runs over 3 innings before Richard Rodriguez was very impressive out of the bullpen with 4 shutout innings that included six strikeouts.
