Saturday was ike Friday, three affiliates won, Las Vegas being the only loser, and Adam Calderone was the hitting hero again. Calderone drove in the first three Fisher Cat runs in support of Kyle Drabek. Drabek was matched up against Casey Kelly, one of Boston's top prospects. Drabek pitched seven shutout innings for the win.
Henderson Alvarez had to face Jimmy Rollins as well as the rest of the Clearwater side and he pitched six shutout innings and kept Rollins off the bases. Jon Tolisano had three hits including a home run. Dunedin and Clearwater also finished a game suspended earlier in the season and Dunedin won that one too. Adeiny Hechavarria hadone hit in each game and so far is hitting the ball on the ground most of the time.
Lansing were down 3-0 in the eighth but came back to win. Brad Mills had a rough start and Las Vegas were blown out.
Brad Mills loaded the bases with no-one out in the first inning, then he proceeded to strikeout the side, including Wilson Betemit and Scott Thorman. Mills wasn't as lucky in the second inning, three doubles, a single and a walk led to four runs. And in the third Mills added two more runs to his tale of woe. That was it for Mills, three innings, six runs, nine hits. Unfortunately most of the rst of the pitchers weren't any better. Steven Register: 2 innings, 3 runs. Merkin Valdez: 2 innings, three runs, 17.55 ERA. Jesse Carlson: 1 inning, 3 runs, 6.75 ERA. David Purcey did pitch one shutout inning.
The Las Vegas hitters had only five hits.
All Kyle Drabek had to do was keep the game close and Adam Calderone would look after the rest. Drabek was matched up against Casey Kelly, one of Boston's top prospects, a 20 year old who was drafted as a two way player but who is now focused on pitching. The game was uneventful, without a runner getting to second, until the bottom of the third. Kelly walked the first two hitters and after a sacrifice, that guy, Calderone, singled in a run.
Through five innings Drabek had only allowed one hit. In the bottom of the fifth Kelly was pulled with two outs, presumably due to his pitch count. Calderone greeted the reliever with a home run to make it a 2-0 game. Drabek gave up five singles between the sixth and seventh innings but two double plays helped him keep Portland off the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the seventh Calderone singled in run number three and, after an Eric Thames single, Brad Emaus doubled in two more runs. Trystan Magnuson pitched the final two innings.
New Hampshire had nine hits, Calderone had three of them, scored two runs and drove in three, Shawn Bowman had two hits.
Calderone is now hitting .321 with an OPS of 930. Over his last ten games Calderone has an OPS of 1217. Over his last three games he is 8-12 with 8 rbi's.
Trystan Magnuson has his ERA down to 1.21, 0.54 over his last ten games. On the season Magnuson has allowed 19 baserunners over 22.1 innings pitched.
This was the continuation of a game that had been suspended with Dunedin leading 5-2. Kenny Rodriguez made his first appearance of the season and was rusty, he gave up five runs in 2.2 innings. Dunedin managed to stay in front by scoring two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. In the fifth Jon Talley and Al Quintana drove in runs. In the sixth Sean Shoffit hit a home run. Dunedin added an insurance run in the eighth and that was needed when Matt Daly gave up a run in the ninth.
Mike McDade had two hits. Hechavarria was 1-3. Hech flew out, grounded out, and singled on a ground ball to left.
Dunedin 5 Clearwater 0 - 7 innings
Henderson Alvarez had to face Jimmy Rollins as well as the usual lineup tonight and he was more than up to the job. Alvarez allowed four singles over six innings, none to Rollins, with no walks. Two of the runners were thrown out trying to steal by Jon Talley, and one was out trying to stretch a single into a double. Alvarez had four strikeouts.
Dunedin scored their first run in the fifth on a John Tolisano home run. Tyler Pastornicky hit his second home run of the season in the sixth. Wellinton Ramirez had a bases-loaded, bases-clearing, double to make it 5-0.
Alan Farina pitched a clean seventh. Tolisano had three hits, Ramirez had two. Encarnacion was 0-3 with a walk. Hechavarria was 1-4. He grounded out three times and singled on a ground ball. So far Hech is a ground ball machine.
Lansing got off to a rough start. Ryan Goins made an error on the first batter and then Ryan Shopshire hit a batter. Both those runners came in to score and Lansing were down 2-0. Bowling Green added another run in the sixth to make it 3-0. Lansing had only four hits through seven innings.
But, in the top of the eighth the Lugnuts loaded the bases, Kenny Wilson and Ryan Goins singled and Ryan Schimpf walked. Mark Sobolewski cleared the bases with a double. Two ground outs brought in the fourth run.
Shopshire pitched six innings, Matt Wright pitched the seventh and eighth, Steve Turnbull nailed down the save in the ninth.
The Luggies had 7 hits. Wilson and Goins had two each.
