A couple of big name pitching prospects came up small on Sunday.
Apologies, folks but a multitude of uninteresting things is going to force me to cut this pretty short today. Fear not, though; there wasn't much to get excited about, despite a 2-2 day for the affiliates.
The 51s trailed this one 11-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth so kudos to them on pulling within six. Brett Wallace banged out his 9th homer of the year in the final frame for his only hit of the day. He also walked and struck out twice. J.P. Arencibia was 1-for-5 with a strikeout.
Lance Broadway started and wasn't awful going six and allowing 3 runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts. It was Marty McLeary who found the PCL not to his liking giving up seven in two innings work.
With kinda-almost-sorta-maybe Jay Phillipe Aumont going head-to-head with Zach Stewart, this had the makings of a real duel. You know how that often shakes out. Aumont lasted just 1.2 while Stewart certainly didn't have his best stuff giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks in six frames. He struck out just one.
The Fisher Cats offense teed off on former Jay Ty Taubenheim, though thanks to homers from Brian Jeroloman and the awesomely named Callix Crabbe, who hit a Grand Slam. Most of the Cats were in on the fun as well. Brad Emaus went 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI, Eric Thames doubled, walked, and scored twice, while Adam Calderone and Jonathan Diaz each had three hits. Diaz, like Emaus, has a wacky BB:K rate at 15:3. The Anti-Fuenmayors.
Al Quintana went 3-for-4 to pace the D-Jays while Tyler Pastornicky had a hit and his 7th stolen base. Kevin Ahrens went 0-for-3 and is hitless in his past 15 AB.
Joel Carreno started and was fine in his four innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out five. Frank Gailey was better in relief picking up the win with three shutout innings. Matthew Daly tallied his 7th save.
Chad Jenkins isn't fairing as well in Lo-A as you might have hoped. He got knocked around a bit again on Sunday giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 5.2 frames. The good news is he walked none and struck out seven.
Not a heck of a lot going on at the plate. Balbino Fuenmayor went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Sean Ochinko was the only other Lugnut to have two hits. A.J. Jimenez was 0-for-4 with two Ks but picked a runner off second base.
