Taking a cue from the big-league club, the affiliates had a solid night with two wins and two losses (although New Hampshire battled until the 13th before taking the loss). Las Vegas led the way with a 12-run attack - and the pitchers finally showed some signs of life by allowing just three runs.
Las Vegas 12 Fresno 3
The trickle-down effect is being felt in Las Vegas with the rash of injuries to pitchers in Toronto. Reliever Adrian Martin received the start for the 51s and allowed just one run in 2.2 innings, although he did allow five hits. He walked no one and struck out three batters. Jonah Bayliss continued his hot pitching (0.00 ERA in 12 innings) and allowed just one hit and one walk in 3.1 innings. He struck out five batters. Sean Stidfole was lit up for the other two runs in 1.2 innings. Brian Wolfe finished the game with a scoreless 1.1 innings of work. Offensively, the outfielders led the way, with Buck Coats going 4 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Aaron Mathews went 3 for 5. Catcher JP Arencibia was just 1 for 5 but he drove in three runs. Old friend Howie Clark was 3 for 5 at the top of the order and scored three runs. Jason Lane and Brett Harper both had two hits. Scott Campbell made his sixth error at third base as he continues to struggle during his conversion from second base.
Binghamton 4 New Hampshire 2 (13 innings)
Ray (Reidier) Gonzalez contines to deal in Double-A with a 1.37 ERA (although his FIP is 3.47 so he's getting a lot of help from the defense). He allowed just one run in 6.2 innings on six hits and one walk. Nate Starner and Celson Polanco combined for 2.2 scoreless innings, while Edgar Estanga took the loss after allowing two runs (just one earned) in 2.2 innings. He allowed three hits, one walk and struck out four batters. Zach Dials worked a scoreless inning and struck out two hitters. Second baseman Brad Emaus was 0 for 5, which brought his average down to .300. Luis Sanchez, Brian Dopirak and Adam Calderone each had two hits. Chris Gutierrez was credited with the only RBI for the Fisher Cats and he was 1 for 4. Catcher Brian Jeroloman was 1 for 4 with a double and two walks.
Brevard County 5 Dunedin 3
Starter Ryan Page had another rough night for Dunedin and he allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out three batters. Trystan Magnuson worked two shutout innings and did not allow a walk (a big deal for him). Bobby Bell allowed one run in two innings but did not allow a walk and struck out four batters. He now has K/9 rate of 18.00 in the early going (18 Ks in 9 IP). Justin Jackson's swoon continued with an 0 for 3 night with a walk and strikeout. John Tolisano was 0 for 3. Eric Thames was 0 for 4. Adam Loewen went 1 for 3 with a walk, run scored and RBI in his season debut. Darin Mastroianni was 1 for 3 but struck out twice, got caught stealing and was picked off. Moises Sierra had a 1 for 4 night with a solo homer.
Lansing 10 South Bend 8
The pitching was not good (again) for Lansing as both Ryan Koch and Jared Potts were lit up for eight runs. Koch allowed five in 6.2 innings. Five hits were collected against him, as well as one walk. He struck out three batters. Potts allowed three hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. He took the blown save as well as the win. Hunter Moody worked a scoreless inning for the save, his first. Offensively, Johermyn Chaves led the way with a 3 for 5 night that included a double, triple and four RBI. He also scored two runs. Michael McDade was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Balbino Fuenmayor and Antonio Jimenez both broke out of their prolonged slumps with two hits each. Jimenez hit a double and drove in two runners. Mark Sobolewski was 0 for 3 but walked twice and scored two runs.
Three Stars:
3. Buck Coats for a 4 for 5 night
2. Johermyn Chavez for a 3 for 5 night that included four RBI
1. Reidier Gonzalez who worked six innings and allowed just one run
