It was a slow train coming for the Chiefs, but Ryan Roberts made it all
worthwhile in the end. The farm affiliates went 3-4.
Rochester 2 @ Syracuse 4, 12 inn.
Ryan Roberts hit a 2 run walkoff homer in the bottom of the 12th inning
to break a 2-2 tie. With 2 outs, Sergio Santos worked reliever
Jason Miller for a walk and Roberts followed with his blast.
Earlier Kevin Barker had homered for the Chiefs. Mike MacDonald
started and went 6 innings and allowed 2 earned runs on 8 hits and no
walks, while striking out 2. Jamie Vermilyea threw 2 innings of 1
hit relief, while striking out 2 and Scott Sauerbeck followed with 1.2
scoreless innings and 3 punchouts. Blaine Neal and Jordan DeJong
completed the perfect night for the Chief pen. Russ Adams played
third base for the first time that I am aware of. The Chiefs won
despite being outhit 12-5.
Harrisburg 16 @ New Hampshire 9
It was a painful blown lead for New Hampshire. The Fisher Cats scored 5
in a first inning capped by a 3 run Erik Kratz homer and added another
in the second, but Ricky Romero could not stand the prosperity,
allowing 6 runs of his own (2 unearned) in the 3rd inning with weak
control being the major issue. Romero walked 6 in 2.1 innings of
work. Seth Overbey came on and gave up 3 runs in 2.2 innings of
work before Matt Roney was truly raked. Manny Mayorson, Ryan Patterson,
Aaron Mathews, the red-hot Rob Cosby and Kratz all had 2 hits for the
Cats.
Palm Beach 3 @ Dunedin 13
The Jays rallied for a lucky 7 runs in the 7th inning to overcome a 3-2
deficit. Eric Neilsen doubled to open the inning and one out
later, Jacob Butler chauffeured him home with a 2 run rip. David
Corrente followed with another blast with 2 outs and the beat went on
until Nielsen ended the scoring in the inning with another
double. Anthony Hatch had 4 hits, including a triple and a homer,
out of the leadoff slot. A.J. Wideman started and went 7 innings,
allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts. Lean
Chad Blackwell threw 2 scoreless frames and induced two groundball
double plays to erase the only two baserunners he allowed.
Lansing 0 @ Kane County 2
Nate Starner started and threw 5 shutout innings, but the offence
could only muster 3 hits and Po-Hsuan Keng was touched for 3 runs late
in the game. Starner allowed 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out
5. Raul Barron walked twice in 3 plate trips, while Scott
Campbell and Travis Snider each wore the collar.
Oneonta 5 @ Auburn 3, 1st
Oneonta 6 @ Auburn 5, 2nd
In the opener, the Tigers went ahead 4-0 after 3 innings and the Doubledays were
hard pressed to mount an offensive threat on with only 3
hits. J. P. Arencibia doubled and scored among his 3 plate
appearances, and also picked a runner straying off second. Shawn
Scobee doubled and scored among his two trips. Kyle Walter
started and went 2 innings, allowing 3 runs. In the nightcap, the Doubledays took a 5-1 lead to the top of the 7th when it all came undone for Ryan Bird and Patrick McGuigan. Adam Calderone and Victor Santana hit back-to-back solo homers in the 1st inning, and Baron Frost followed with another one out later, to get things rolling for Auburn. Ben Zeskind and Wes Stone chipped in with 2 hits apiece, while Calderone walked twice in addition to his blast.
GCL Jays 4 @ GCL Braves 3
Joel Carreno threw 6 solid innings to lead the young Jays to
victory. Carreno allowed 1 earned run on 5 hits and no walks,
while striking out 7. He has been very effective this
summer. Eric Eiland went 2-3 with a walk, and stole his 12th base
without being caught. The lesser lights carried the Jays, as
Balbino Fuenmayor went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts, Joel Collins went 0-3
with a sacrifice fly and Yohermyn Chavez also took an 0 fer.
Kevin Ahrens went 1-4 and Justin Jackson had the day off. One of
those lesser lights, the 19 year old third baseman Jonathan del
Campo doubled and singled yesterday, and is having a quietly productive
season with a .309/.373/.456 line.
