Syracuse was the only winner among the farm affiliates who went 1-4.

Syracuse 8 @ Rochester 1

The Chiefs treated old friend Dave Gassner most unkindly in an 8-1 romp. Chad Mottola led an 18 hit attack with a walk, a single, a double and a triple (I wonder if anyone has ever hit for a supercycle- HBP, walk, single, double, triple, HR). Mottola scored 3 runs and drove in 2. Ryan Roberts and Ray Olmedo each pitched in with 3 hits apiece. Journeyman Jeremy Cummings threw 8 innings of 3 hit ball for the win. Adam Lind went 1-5.

New Hampshire 3 @ Portland 5

A 4 run fourth inning off Kyle Yates was New Hampshire's undoing as the Cats fell to the Dogs. Ryan Patterson had staked the Fishers to the lead with a 2 run rip in the top of the frame before a single, two walks and two doubles in the bottom of the frame put Portland ahead. Hot Red Sox pitching prospect Justin Masterson struck out 10 Cat batters in 6.2 innings of work, while Yates allowed another run in the 7th and left with a final line of 5 earned runs in 6.2 innings on 8 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Rob Cosby hit a solo shot in the 9th.

Sarasota 5 @ Dunedin 0

Let's have the good news first. Billy Carnline relieved and went 2.2 shutout innings, allowing only one baserunner, and Cory Patton doubled and singled in 4 plate appearances. And that's it. Robert Ray started and was touched for 4 earned runs on 8 hits in 4.1 innings. He did walk one and strike out 5. Jacob Butler wore the golden sombrero.

Lansing, scheduled day off

Auburn 5 @ Tri-City 10

Auburn out-hit Tri-City 9-8, but six Doubleday errors led six unearned runs in an ugly loss. Carlos Vasquez and Manny Rodriguez homered to lead the offence, while J.P. Arencibia took an 0 fer. Starter Kyle Walter was not at his best, but was on the mound for all six of the unearned runs.

GCL Yankees 5 @ GCL Blue Jays 2

Joel Carreno continued his fine pitching, but two errors in the 4th inning led to unearned runs and he took the loss. Carreno went 7 innings and allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 8. Joel Collins blasted his 3rd homer and also drew a walk, while Yohermyn Chavez also went 1-3 with a walk. Balbino Fuenmayor had a rough day, striking out 4 times, while Kevin Ahrens and John Tolisano also wore the collar. Eric Eiland had 2 hits to raise his average to .253.

3 stars

3rd star- Joel Collins and Ray Olmedo
2nd star- Chad Mottola
1st star- Jeremy Cummings
