One win in four attempts for the affiliates. New Hampshire behind outstanding pitching from Jesse Litsch won 3-1. Aaron Mathews and Dustin Majewski led the offense for the Fisher Cats. Elsewhere Ty Taubenheim feels like Roy Halladay, AJ Wideman pitched well for Dunedin while Travis Snider continued his education in Lansing.
Ty Taubenheim had a nightmare start to this game, single, double, single, double, double, out, double, double, and the Chiefs were dwon 5-0. Ty allowed three more runs in the second and one in the fourth when his night came to a merciful end. Russ Ohlendorf, who the Yankees acquired over the winter in the Randy Johnson trade, pitched 6.1 shutout innings for the win. The Chiefs had six hits in the game, never more than one in an inning. Curtis Thigpen went 2-2 with a walk to bump his batting average to .288.
Jesse Litsch was outstanding in this game. He pitched eight innings and never allowed more than one baserunner in an inning. He did allow five hits and one walk but two double plays helped him out. The only blemish on the scoreboard was a fifth inning home run. The Fisher Cats had taken the lead in the fourth inning, Aaron Mathews led off with a double and scored on a single by Dustin Majewski. The Fisher Cats retook the lead in the seventh inning, Dustin Majewski walked with one out. Ryan Klosterman singled and Majewski moved to second. Manny Mayorson hit a ground ball to the shortstop who tried for the forceplay but threw the ball away allowing Majewski to score. Mathews and Majewski produced another run in the eighth, Mathews singled and scored on a two out double by Majewski. Mathews went 3-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Majewski went 2-3 with a walk, one run scored, two RBI's and a double. Lee Gronkiewicz recorded the save.
Michael Mac Donald has been promoted to AAA and Ricky Romero has been placed on the disabled list. Kurt Isenberg and Orlando Trias, who starts Sunday, were promoted to take the vacant spots in the rotation.
AJ Wideman made his first start at high A and pitched well. Wideman allowed one hit in the first three innings but gave up a two run home run in the fourth. Josh Kreuzer homered for Dunedin in the sixth to make it a one run game. Vero Beach got that run back in the bottom of the sixth and it was unearned. An error by Kreuzer on a pickoff attempt allowed the runner to move to second. A sac bunt and a sac fly allowed the run to score. In the top of the seventh Anthony Hatch singled to lead off the seventh, Carlo Cota walked, Jacob Butler hit a deep fly ball that was caught but both runners moved up. Hatch scored on a ground ball then Eric Nielsen hit a two run home run and Dunedin led 4-3. Kristian Bell gave up a three run home run to Vero Beach in the eighth and Vero Beach led 6-4. Dunedin picked up an unearned run in the ninth but lost 6-5. AJ Wideman pitched well, two earned runs allowed on four hits in six innings. Anthony Hatch was the only Jay with two hits.
AJ Wideman was due to start this game but he pitched for Dunedin instead. Adrian Martin started and allowed one run in two innings. Ben Harrison followed and also pitched two innings allowing two runs. Lansing had only one hit through five innings but in the sixth Yuber Rodriguez led off with a single. Jonathan Jaspe followed with an RBI double and then a Scott Campbell single put runners on first and third. Jonathan Diaz then ground into a double play scoring the second run but emptying the bases. Travis Snider singled to lead off the ninth as the potential tying run, then moved to second on a ground out and stayed there when Sean Shoffit struck out. Snider was then picked off second and got caught in a rundown trying to get to third, he was out to end the game, breaking the cardinal rule, "don't make the third out of the inning at third base."
Travis Snider was 1-3, Sean Shoffit went 2-4. Seth Overbey pitched two perfect innings, on the season he has pitched 16.2 shutout innings with six hits and three walks allowed, with 16 strikeouts. Overbey has indeed pitched very well and has a 5.6 GB/FB ratio.
