In my last minor league report Pulaski won their game, to help the Jays avoid being swept throughout the minors. Yesterday, one team managed to make sure the Jays avoid the sweep again. However, this time it was a case of one loss ruining the chance for a complete organisational sweep, as the parent club and all six minor league teams won. Yes, you read that right. All six minor league teams won and so did Toronto, yet it wasn’t an organisational sweep. Read on to find how this happened.
Buffalo 1 @ Syracuse 2 (11) - Box Score
The first game of the doubleheader was supposed to be a nice quick seven-inning affair to allow the teams time to play the second part of the twin billing. Buffalo and Syracuse did play both games, but the first game went into extra innings and took three and a half hours. Shaun Marcum pitched five scoreless innings before turning it over to Lee Gronkiewicz. “Game Over Gronk” allowed a run in the seventh for his first blown save of the year. Jordan de Jong, Brandon League and Ryan Houston would pitch four innings of three-hit relief to keep Buffalo at bay in the extras. This game featured another “Nasty Mastny” sighting, but he eventually turned things over to Jason Davis in the bottom of the eleventh. Wayne Lydon led off the inning with a bunt single and then another bunt by Luis Figueroa advanced him to second. Kevin Barker was intentionally walked to set up the double play, but Chad Mottola refused to follow the Bison script and singled home Lydon to end the game, just in time for another seven innings of baseball.
Buffalo 6 @ Syracuse 4 - Box Score
Josh Banks’ struggles continued as he allowed six runs in six innings. He allowed four homers, including one to ex-SkyChief Jason Alfaro and a two-run shot to Andy Marte in the sixth inning that ended a 4-4 tie. Vinny Chulk pitched the seventh inning, but he allowed three baserunners so there’s little positive to find there. John-Ford Griffin had a two-run homer and a double in the game.
Trenton 0 @ New Hampshire 2 - Box Score
All the scoring was done by the end of the first as Curtis Thigpen led off the bottom of the first with a single. He was followed by a Danny Solano double, with Solano taking third on the throw home. Adam Lind struck out and then Ron Davenport singled home Solano. It was suddenly 2-0 New Hampshire with a runner on and only one out in the first and Trenton was looking at a long night. However a strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play got the Thunder out of the inning and Tyler Clippard pitched six more innings without allowing a hit. For the Fisher Cats Kyle Yates pitched seven innings, surrendered three hits and struck out eight batters.
Dunedin 5 @ Sarasota 3 - Box Score
Russell Savickas gave up a pair of runs in five innings to pick up his first win for Dunedin since his promotion for Lansing. Connor Falkenbach pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief as Milton Tavarez continued his Jose Mesa impersonation, picking up his 17th save of the year while his ERA rose to 6.21. Offensively, Christian Snavely hit his fourth homer of the year in the seventh to give the D-Jays their fourth and fifth runs of the game. Eric Arnold, Ryan Patterson and Aaron Matthews added doubles for Dunedin. Arnold’s was particularly productive, as he hit it with two out to drive in two runners and tie the game in the fourth. Patterson would drive home Matthews next inning and Dunedin wouldn’t look back.
Clinton 2 @ Lansing 3 - Box Score
Adrian Martin gave up three hits and two walks while striking out five and pitched just long enough to get the win and move to 3-0 on the season. Josh Sowers gave up the runs, both unearned, in 2.2 innings as Edward Rodriguez picked up his first save for Lansing. The Lugnuts had seven hits all game, with three players each netting a pair. Joey Metropolous was the offensive star, as he went 2-4 with a HR and 2 RBI. Along with a solo shot in the second, Metropolous hit an RBI groundout in the third inning which scored Jesus Gonzalez with the game’s eventual winning run.
Auburn 10 @ Jamestown 0 - Box Score
This was a relatively close game until Auburn exploded for seven runs in the top of the ninth off an unfortunate Jamestown reliever. Hector Delgadillo went five innings and surrendered two hits and a walk to total nine scoreless innings for the season. Delgadillo struck out two batters. Seth Overbey and two other relievers combined for four one-hit innings after Delgadillo left. (If you can’t tell, I like writing Delgadillo.) It was a solid all-around offensive performance for Auburn as every starter had a hit and eight of the nine scored a run. Auburn only had one extra-base hit and Matthew Liuzza and Brian Hall were the only Doubledays with more than one hit. It was nearly as total a team effort as there can be.
Burlington 4 @ Pulaski 9 - Box Score
Francisco Mateo got his second win for Pulaski, posting a nearly identical line to his first start with five strong innings where he allowed one earned run, three hits and a walk. However, he only struck out four as opposed to the six he did last time. Five relievers split the remaining four innings, allowing two unearned runs, which equalled three in the game. Canadian Chris Emanuele went 2-4 with a double and a walk. Johermyn Chavez went 2-3, while Victor Santana hit his third homer already for Pulaski. Jonathan Jaspe went 3-4 with a double and a pickoff at first base, while Leance Soto went 0-3 and his average dropped to .105.
