Toronto downs Boston 8 – 5 to pull within a game and a half of the AL East lead, now held jointly by the Beantowners and the Bronx Bombers.
Stars of the Game: Vernon Wells edges out Troy Glaus in an impressive fireworks display.
Other Heros: Gustavo Chacin returns from the Disabled List to dodge & weave through 5 innings. Justin Speier bounces back from allowing a game-tying homer yesterday to strike out Manny Ramirez with the tying runners on in the 8th. B.J. Ryan strikes out Jason Varitek on three pitches to end the 8th, and mows down 3 more in the 9th.
For the Sox: Every Sock had a hit, except Manny, who walked three times. Trot Nixon had the only extra-base hit for Boston, a solo homer in the 6th. Manny & David Ortiz both blasted foul balls into the 5th deck. Bottom line: Everybody did a little, but nobody stepped up to answer Wells and Glaus.
Hmmm: Josh Beckett has now faced the Jays 4 times this season.

Against the Jays, the only team he’s faced more than once this year, Beckett totals 24 innings with a 6.38 ERA. Against everybody else, he’s pitched 45 innings in 7 starts with a 3.42 ERA. There are two possible conclusions: the Jays own Beckett, or Beckett can’t fool teams twice. I like both possibilities.
Elsewhere:
The Tigers came back from being down 6 – 1 to the Yankees, eventually tying it up in the 8th. The game went into extras, and the Empire scored 5 in the top of the 11th. Mariano went the last 3 innings to earn the win. Melky Cabrera, Bernie Williams, Terrence Long, and Andy Phillips combined for 11 hits.
In other news, Baltimore beat Tampa Bay.
The marquee matchup of the night was Mark Buehrle and the White Sox in Cleveland taking on C.C. Sabathia, but neither starter was in top form. Each went 6 innings, 4 runs charged to Buehrle and 3 to Sabathia, and both bullpens were untouched and Cleveland prevailed.
Today: The Jays go for the sweep with Theodore Roosevelt Lilly facing off with right-hander David Pauley, making his Major League debut. At AA Portland this year the 22-year-old has posted a 2.39 ERA in 60 innings, 47 K, 17 BB, 6 HR.
