Orlando Trias recorded the only win for the affiliates. Lansing ran into a pretty good pitcher for A ball, Kerry Wood. Syracuse faced Cole Hamels, one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. Lansing and Syracuse lost in extra innings, New Hamshire lost in regulation. Vinnie Chulk made a AAA appearance and gave up a home run, and Billy Carnline is human after all.
Syracuse 1 Scranton 2 - 10 innings
This was a good pithing matchup between Phillies prospect Cole Hamels and Blue Jay prospect Jamie Vermilyea. The Chiefs scored in the first, Luis Figueroa singled, stole second and came home on a Jason Phillips single. The Chiefs only managed three hits off Hamels over the next 6+ innings, Hamels line was impressive 7 5 1 1 0 10. Jamie Vermilyea matched Hamels and pitched five shutout innings, conceding 4 hits and two walks. New Chief Vinnie Chulk came on in the sixth and gave up a home run to tie the game. In the bottom of the tenth Dusty Wathan homered off Brian Tallet to give Scranton the win. Luis Figueroa and Chad Mottola had two hits each. Ryan Houston pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Vermilyea and Houston have AAA ERA's of zero.
New Hampshire thought they might find a win yesterday but the bullpen lost it for them, Danny Hill coughed up three runs in the bottom of the seventh to turn a 4-2 lead into a 5-4 deficit. Brian Wolfe had started for the Fisher Cats after his promotion from Dunedin and he did well, two runs allowed on three hits in six innings.
The Fisher Cats took a 2-0 lead in the third, David Smith singled, Chip Cannon doubled him home and Vito Chiaravalloti singled home Cannon. After the Mets tied the game the Cats retook the lead in the fourth, John Schneider doubled and scored on a Lind single. David Smith homered in the seventh to give the Fisher Cats a brief two run lead.
Smith was 2-3 with 2 walks, scored twice and drove in one on the home run. John Schneider had two doubles.
Orlando Trias pitched well through six innings, one run allowed on six hits and 3 walks. Dunedin went ahead in the fifth, Dustin Majewski singled, Aaron Mathews doubled, and later Juan Peralta drove in two runs with a single. Dunedin padded their lead with another run in the seventh on doubles from Aaron Mathews and Ryan Klosterman, and then added two more in the ninth when Ryan Patterson singled in a pair. Milton Tavarez allowed a two out, two run, home run in the ninth. Ryan Patterson and Aaron Mathews had two hits each.
Lansing 3 Peoria 5 - 10 innings
Kerry Wood might be a little too good for A ball, maybe he should get a promotion? Josh Bell singled, Joey Metropoulos walked, Brian Pettway was hit by a pitch and that was all the offense off Wood in his five innings. The first ten outs Wood recorded were all by strikeout, and he ended with 12 K's in 5 innings.
Billy Carnline started for Lansing and he had his first off night, Peoria scored a run in the first on three two out singles, and two more in the fifth on a home run. With Wood out of the game Lansing tied the game in the seventh, Pettway got it started with a double and singles by Anthony Hatch, Sean Shoffit and Jacob Butler helped the Lugnuts score three times. The Lugnuts were hurt by two outs in the inning on the bases, one at home and one at third.
Paul Phillips was asked to go three innings in relief but that was his downfall as he gave up a two run home run in the tenth. Lansing were outhit 13-7. Carnline's line was 5 8 3 3 0 2.
