Today the Boston Red Sox returned Jamie Vermilyea to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Red Sox selected him in the Rule V draft, but he was competed for a job in a deep bullpen. Furthermore, with the Red Sox being a contender he needed to heavily impress them to make the team. He only had one appearance in Spring Training, where he didn't allow a run over two innings, but evidently he didn't show them enough in practice to make the team.
Vermilyea spent most of last season in New Hampshire, where he had a 7.19 K/9, 2.13 BB/9 and a 0.69 HR/9. He had a 2.60 ERA over 27 apperances, including 4 starts. He struggled in 16 appearances with Syracuse, but he’s only 23 years old. Vermilyea likely won’t be an impact player, but he could be a good reliever if he maintains his ability to induce groundballs. I have no idea if the Red Sox inquired about trading something to the Jays for the right to keep him, but if they did I’m glad that J.P. didn’t give him away. With that move the Jays still have one player from their system outstanding in the Rule V draft, and that’s Steve Andrade, who is trying to claim a job in the Padres bullpen.
