Yesterday's starting pitchers included John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and Kevin Millwood. How did they do?

Glavine pitched six fine innings, allowing just four hits and two runs. It wasn't good enough - Jason Schmidt was a little better. Glavine has lost 3 games when the Mets were shut out, and two games by a 2-1 score. This was one of them. Glavine's record is now 10-11, as the Mets lost by a 2-1.

Kevin Millwood was a little better than Glavine, allowing just 6 hits as he pitched his first complete game since 2003. It wasn't good enough - Scott Downs was a little better. Millwood has lost 4 games when the Indians were shut out, and three games by a 2-1 score. This was the third time. Millwood's record is now 7-11, despite the fourth best ERA in the AL, as the Indians lost 2-1.

Greg Maddux was a little better than Millwood, allowing just five hits as he pitched his second complete game of the season. It wasn't good enough - Dontrelle Willis was a little better. Maddux has lost 2 games when the Cubs were shut out, and three times when they scored just one run. Maddux now has a 10-11 record, as the Cubs lost 2-1.

John Smoltz didn't pitch nearly as well as his former teammates. Although he allowed just 3 hits in his seven innings, a pair of two-run homers accounted four 4 Milwaukee runs. But the Braves scored 8 runs of their own, and Smoltz is now 13-6 after losing his first three starts of 2005.

Chipper Jones and the amazing Jeff Francouer both had three hits for the Braves. So did Marcus Giles, who banged out a pair of doubles and now has 39 two-base hits this season. Derrek Lee and Miguel Tejada are the only players in the majors with more doubles. He's not your NL MVP, but Giles is having himself quite a season.
