Pop. Pop. Fizz. Fizz. The farm affiliates got good pitching out of the pen, and went 3-3 on the evening.

Syracuse 3 Ottawa 2

The Chiefs scored 3 in the third inning to take an early lead, and Chad Gaudin, Kevin Tolar and Matt Whiteside made it stand up. Gaudin went 7.1 innings and gave up both Lynx runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. He punched 5 tickets. Tolar struck out the only batter he faced; Whiteside retired all four batters he saw, one by strikeout. Newly acquired Desi Relaford, Justin Singleton, and Kevin Barker had 2 hits each for the Chiefs. Gabe Gross went 0-4, while Guillermo Quiroz went 0-2 with a walk. Lynx baserunners stole 2 bases off Gaudin/Quiroz without being caught.Quiroz also was thrown out at the plate as a runner from second on a single off the wall.

The Sea Dogs got the better of the Fisher Cats once again. The Cats' pitching could not be faulted. Ismael Ramirez was the hard-luck loser as he fell to 7-13 despite allowing only 1 earned run on 4 hits and no walks with 4 punchouts in 5.2 innings. Bubbie Buzachero followed with 2 scoreless innings, with 3 baserunners and 2 strikeouts. Jesse Carlson and Ryan Houston took care of the last 4 outs with ease. The Cats, led by Ron Davenport's 2 doubles, had 8 hits on the evening, but could not manage to string them together. Chip Cannon wore the golden sombrero. Curtis Thigpen also went 0-4, threw out a runner and had a passed ball.

Justin James started and wished he hadn't, as George's Young Yankees knocked him around for 3 earned runs in 3.1 innings on 9 hits. Daryl Harang struggled for 1.2 innings, while Danny Hill finished up nicely striking out 2 in 1.2 scoreless innings. Meanwhile, the D-Jays could manage only 4 hits in the rain-shortened 7 inning game. Rodney Medina led off and played centerfield; he tripled and walked twice in 3 trips. Adam Lind went 1-3.

The Lugnuts ripped out 15 hits, drew 7 walks and put together four 2-run rallies on the way to victory. Jason Armstrong led the way with 4 singles, while Aaron Mathews tripled, singled twice and walked in 5 trips. Eric Nielsen singled thrice and drove in 3. Po-Hsuan Keng started and hung in long enough for the win, going 5.1 innings and allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 1 walk with 3Ks. Aaron Tressler defanged the Rattlers for the long save with 3.2 shutout innings- 3 hits, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.

Jesse Litsch's debut in the NYPL was brief and painful. The Jammers prodded him for 4 runs, 2 earned on 4 hits and 1 walk in 2.2 innings. Litsch struck out 2. Randy Dicken was tagged for another run despite striking out 3 in 2.1 innings. Sean Stidfole followed suffered an even less just fate, as his line reads 2.2 innings, 0 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Trailing 7-1 after 7 and 1/2 innings and a rain delay, the Doubledays mounted a furious comeback with 4 runs in the eighth, but Gabriel Alfaro could not kick out the Jammers, who rebounded with 3 of their own in the top of the ninth. The D-Days rallied again in the bottom of the ninth. Ryan Patterson's 2 out run-scoring double brought Cory Patton to the plate as the tying run, but Patton whiffed and the fans went home unhappy. Patterson homered, doubled and singled in 5 trips and drove in 4; his seasonal line now stands at .333/.379/.566 with a W/K rate of 17/39. Cory Patton hit a 3 run homer in the eighth. Brian Pettway took an 0 fer with 3 strikeouts. Josh Bell singled in 4 trips, and caught 1 of 4 Jamestown bag thiefs.

Jonathan Jaspe's run-scoring single in the top of the ninth broke a 3-3 tie, and Benjamin Harrison made the lead stand up. Wilfreddy Aguirre started for the P-Jays and went 3 solid innings, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and no walks with 1 strikeout. Peter Eberhardt was even better, throwing 3 shutout innings with no walks and 4 strikeouts. Harrison gave up 2 runs in the 7th, one of which was unearned, but then shut down the B-Orioles (I can't really call them the B-O's, can I?) on 2 hits and no walks in 3 innings. Octavio Cordero reached base 3 times out of the leadoff spot, while Jesus Gonzalez had 2 hits in 4 trips. Leance Soto went 0-4 with strikeouts, and made his 21st error of the short season. Ouch.
