Lots of offence in Syracuse and Lansing nets wins for the Toronto farm; so does solid pitching in Dunedin, but in Auburn it’s not enough.
Ottawa 4 @ Syracuse 9
The bats were booming in Syracuse as the SkyChiefs scored 9 in disposing of the Ottawa Lynx. The home team launched 4 round-trippers: Guillermo Quiroz had 2 as part of a 4-RBI night and was joined by Kevin Barker and Jason Alfaro. Gabe Gross and Bryant Nelson also registered 2-hit nights as part of 10-hit Syracuse attack. Veteran infielder Desi Relaford has joined the SkyChiefs, he had a pinch-hit single in the 8th.
On the mound, Chad Gaudin turned in a “Quality Start” – which is sub-par for him at AAA. Chad went 6 innings, scattering 9 hits and 3 walks for 3 earned runs, punching out 6. Frank Rosario collected a save of the 3-inning variety, allowing 1 unearned run on a hit and 2 walks, 1 K.
A solid start from Kurt Isenberg (1 run on 5 hits over 6 innings) was backed up by shutout relief from Brian Reed, Justin James, and Brad Mumma. The lefty Mumma was credited a save when he came on with 1 on and 2 out in the 9th and induced a pop-up to the shortstop.
The Jays scored all 4 of their runs in the bottom of the 6th on a night when they totaled just 6 hits. Adam Lind had the only extra-base hit (a double) as part of a 2-hit night. Robinzon Diaz also had 2 safeties.
A wooly one in Lansing saw the Dragons score 3 in the top of the first and the Lugnuts come roaring back with 4 in the bottom of the frame on a grand slam from shortstop Ryan Klosterman. Klosterman would add a solo homer in the 3rd to make it a 5-RBI night. Centre fielder Aaron Mathews doubled, tripled, and walked; right fielder Eric Nielsen notched two base hits while first baseman; Charles Anderson had two walks to go with his single, while DH Chris Snavely one-upped him by walking thrice along with the base knock.
Po-Hsuan Keng collected the win despite allowing 4 runs over 5 innings. Jordy Templet checked the Dragons on just 1 run over his 3-inning relief appearance, allowing 4 hits and striking out 3 while issuing no free passes.
The Doubledays knotted up the ballgame at 2 with a pair of runs in the top of the 9th, but lost it in when the Muckdogs push one across in the bottom of the 10th. The winner scored with Yesson Berroa on the hill for his 3rd inning of relief; Auburn is currently in the midst of 18 scheduled games in 18 days. Earlier, Adrian Martin started and went 4 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, no walks and 4 whiffs. Josh Sowers kept his 3 innings scoreless despite 3 hits and 2 walks.
Left fielder Brian Pettway and centre fielder Matt Cooksey each had 2 hits and a walk, with one of Pettway’s safeties being a double. Ryan Patterson pinch hit in the ninth and drove in the first run on a groundout, later scoring the second run on an error. First baseman Nick Thomas walked 3 times in 5 plate appearances.
The Third Star: Kurt Isenberg , Dunedin. A solid start.
The Second Star: Ryan Klosterman, Lansing. Two bombs.
The First Star: Guillermo Quiroz, Syracuse. Also two bombs.
