The Blue Jay farm takes 3 and drops 3, with more pitching than hitting.
Syracuse – Off day
The Fisher Cats took two from the Senators as Dave Purcey turned in his best AA start yet, a 7-inning complete game gem. Purcey allowed just 3 hits (including a solo homer), struck out 3, and best of all, walked just 1. The offence needed all that, as they could score only 2 runs off Darrell Rasner. Curtis Thigpen was 1-for-2 with a walk; Chip Cannon was 1-for-2 with a double.
The bats woke up for the nightcap, roaring back from a 6-4 deficit with 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th. Miguel Negron reached base 3 times out of the leadoff spot and scored two runs. Rob Cosby had 3 RBI on two singles, and Cannon blasted a double and a homer. Erik Kratz scored three runs on 2 walks and a solo homer.
Bubbie Buzachero made a spot start, his first of the season, and lasted 3-1/3 while surrendering 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits. Tracy Thorpe was touched for 1 earned and 1 unearned, with Steve Andrade and Ryan Houston shutting things down over the final 1-2/3.
Kyle Yates was done in by his own throwing error as he pitched a masterful 7 innings, striking out 10 and giving up just 4 hits and 1 walk. But with one out and a man on first in the bottom of the 4th, Yates threw away a ground ball, allowing the runner to score and the batter to reach 3rd base. A second unearned run came in when the next batter singled, and that was that as Fort Myers starter Adam Harben shut out the Blue Jays. DH Robinzon Diaz was the only Jay to reach twice as he singled and walked; Adam Lind and David Smith accounted for Dunedin’s other two hits.
Jason Armstrong and Aaron Matthews had two hits each, but the rest of the Lansing lineup accounted for just a single and a walk as the Lugnuts made it a two-shutout night for the Toronto farm. Russ Savickas was torched for all 5 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks while retiring just 2 batters. Jordy Templet (4-1/3 no hit innings) and Dewon Day (3 innings, 2 hits) were brilliant in relief.
A balanced Doubleday attack saw every batter collect at least one base hit as they scored 6 runs in defeating the Crosscutters. 2B Jermy Acey, 1B Nick Thomas, and C Byron Bell notched safeties each, while RF Cory Patton doulbed and walked. LF Ryan Patterson and DH Joe Metropoulos both had a single to show for 4 at-bats.
Starter Kristian Bell was peppered for 9 base hits over 6 innings, but he held Williamsport to 3 runs by not issuing any free passes. Paul Phillips recorded a wildly effective 2-inning save: no hits, 4 walks, 5 punchouts.
The Jays battled back from a 6-1 deficit after 5 innings, but came up short in dropping a contest to the Elizabethton Twins. Dennis Bigley was roughed up for all 6 Twin runs over his 5 innings, with 2 homers accounting for much of the damage. Ben Harrison turned in a perfect 3 innings of relief, striking out 4 along the way, and Cory Hahn tossed a 1-hit 9th.
1B Paul Franko walked, singled, and homered for the best line amongst Pulaski hitters. CF Zach Kalter and LF Heliezer Aguilar both doubled, SS Jesus Gonzalez had a single and a walk, and RF Jacob Butler drew two bases on balls.
Honourable Mention: Chip Cannon, New Hampshire. 3 extra-base hits in a twinbill.
The Third Star: Jordy Templet, Lansing. 13 up, 13 down.
The Second Star: David Purcey, New Hampshire. 3 hits over 7 innings and just 1 walk.
The First Star: Kyle Yates , Dunedin. A brilliant outing save for a poor throw to first.
