Except maybe Casey Janssen, who is at his 3rd minor league stop this season and has yet to break a sweat. 3 wins in 5 games for the Blue Jay farm. Meanwhile, General Patton conquers July.
Syracuse 6 @ Pawtucket 5
Shaun Marcum struck out 7 over 5 innings, but allowed 3 Red Sox runs on 7 hits (including 2 dingers) and 2 walks. Jason Arnold allowed another run, and newcomer Kevin Tolar allowed one more and was charged a blown save. Tolar vultured the win, however, when the SkyChiefs plated 2 in the top of the 9th and Matt Whiteside shut the door for his 19th save.
As usual, Kevin Barker swung a big stick for Syracuse, smacking a 3-run shot in the 6th as part of a 2-hit night. Leadoff hitter Gabe Gross reached 3 times, stole a base, and threw a runner out at second base. 3B Bryant Nelson and SS Julius Matos singled twice each, while JF and GQ took oh-fers.
Chip Cannon doubled home the tying run in the bottom of the 8th and Ryan Roberts singled home the game-winner with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th as the Fisher Cats rallied to silence the Thunder. Casey Janssen got the start and went 6 shoutout innings, allowing just 4 singles and a walk while striking out 8, lowering his double-A ERA to 1.40.
A.J. Wideman went 6 innings for the Lugnuts, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits and a walk while striking out 3. Jordy Templet put in a solid effort of two innings, allowing 1 run and striking out 2, but the Lansing offence could only manage 2 runs of support. Jason Armstrong, David Hicks, and Ryan Klosterman all collected two hits. Yuber Rodriquez had a walk to show for his 4 plate appearances.
Eric Fowler (4 innings), Eddie Rodriguez, Josh Sowers, and Sean Stidfole all gave up earned runs at a rate of 1 per inning as the the Doubledays fell to the Yankees. Offensively, CF Matt Cooksey drove in all 3 Auburn runs with a blast in the 3rd inning. DH Nick Thomas and 3B Anthony Garibaldi each reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
Anthony Hatch (homer), Jonathan Jaspe (double), and Jacob Butler (2 singles) all drove in 2 runs as the Blue Jays won in convincing fashion. Leadoff man Zach Kalter reached base 3 times on a hit and two walks, while Wesley Stone also drew two bases on balls. Starter Shane Benson went 4 innings, charged with 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking nobody. Winning pitcher Hector Delgadillo tossed 3-2/3 shutout frames, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks with 1 K. Ben Harrison picked up the save as he recorded the final 4 outs.
The Third Star: Kevin Barker, Syracuse. 2 hits including a 3-run round-tripper.
The Second Star: Ryan Roberts, New Hampshire. 2 hits, 2 walks, 1 game-winning RBI.
The First Star: Casey Janssen, New Hampshire. Just another day at the office.
A slump for Chip Cannon and an injury to Casey Janssen paved the way for a brand new Three-Star leaderboard for July, and Cory Patton took full advantage. The General collected 60 points in being named the First Star on four different July dates, beating out lefty Davis Romero and fellow bopper-in-waiting Adam Lind for the monthly crown. Patton blasted 7 homers in 105 at-bats in putting together a very pretty .292 / .351 / .590 line. Left-hander Jesse Litsch made the biggest splash amongst new Jays, as the 2004 draft-and-follow collected 45 points on 4 Three-Star credits. Meanwhile, Janssen’s overall lead stood up despite his only making 3 starts for the month, but Ryan Roberts passed Cannon for second place.
