The SkyChiefs built a 5-1 lead going to the bottom of the 6th inning with Brandon League on the mound, but Gerry reports that the fates turned against League at that point. A [leadoff] hit was followed by a bunt back to the mound, from the radio it was scored a hit as the throw from League hit the runner, but it could have been an error. The next hitter hit the ball to [shortstop] Julius Matos who fell down, another hit said the scorer. A groundout, a wild pitch, and a double later, and the Chiefs lead was down to one. Adrian Burnside took over on the hill for the 7th, and Spike Lundberg allowed both runners he inherited from Burnside to score on a double by the first batter he faced. League’s line for the contest reads 6 innings, 4 earned runs on 9 hits, 7 Flyin’ Hawaiian Punch-Outs and no walks.
The Syracuse hitters managed just one extra-base knock amongst their 9 hits, a double by Matos. He had 2 hits on the night, as did the freshly re-habbed 3B John Hattig. LF John-Ford Griffin had an RBI single and an outfield assist; Gabe Gross had the night off.

5 runs were enough to get the job done in New Hampshire, as Cameron Reimers turned in a solid effort (7 IP, 3 runs on 6 hits, 4-1 K-BB) and Ryan Houston and Lee Gronkiewicz shut the Baysox down over the final 2 innings. DH Kevin Barker swung the biggest stick, with a double and a solo shot, while RF Mikael Jova and 3B Rob Cosby each doubled and singled. Ryan Roberts had a very nice game in his Eastern League debut, reaching base 3 times on two singles and a walk, playing and batting second. SS Raul Tablado and CF Miguel Negron each went oh-fer; 1B Vito Chiaravalloti walked and singled.

The Blue Jays could only squeeze two runs out of their 11 hits and 2 walks in losing to the Daytona Cubs. RF David Smith contributed 3 singles, LF Adam Lind a single and a double, and DH Robinzon Diaz two base knocks. SS Manny Mayorson had Dunedin’s other extra-base hit, a double in the 2-run 4th. 2B Carlo Cota, demoted to allow Roberts to move up to New Hampshire, walked and singled.
The victim of the lack of run support was southpaw Kurt Isenberg, who allowed 3 runs, 2 earned, on 6 hits through 5+ innings. Isenberg struck out 5 and issued just 1 free pass. Tracy Thorpe came in with 2 on and nobody out in the 6 inning and not only stranded both runners, but pitched 2 more shutout innings. Thorpe allowed just a single in his 3 frames, no walks and 1 strikeout. Davis Romero and Brian Reed combined to strike out the side in the ninth, though Romero was a little shaky in allowing a hit and a walk.

A heartbreaker for the Lugnuts in the Quad Cities, as Kyle Yates pitched an absolute gem for 7 innings but couldn’t get it into the win column. Yates allowed just 3 hits through those first 7 innings, striking out 9, walking none, and found himself in the bottom of the 8th up 3-0. He induced a groundout from the first batter, but a hit batter and a walk put runners on 1st and 2nd and Joey McLaughlin was called in from the pen. 2 errors, 2 hits, and a walk later, and suddenly the score had swung to 5-3 in favour of the Swing. The Nuts had men on the corners with 2 out in the 9th, but to no avail as they couldn’t bring them home. McLaughlin was charged his first blown save of the season.
2B Juan Peralta had a nice night at the dish, driving in 2 with a double and a triple. CF Luke Hetherington found himself on base 3 times, via a walk and two singles. Catcher Curtis Thigpen doubled in 5 trips, stole a base and committed one of the costly errors.
