     Toronto hosted a Demolition Derby-type ballgame on Thursday night, the kind that managers hope will end with their opponent worse for wear. The Blue Jays wound up dented and dinged, but Seattle broke down first in an 8-6 win for the home team.

     Given an early cushion, Cha Seung Baek soon dug the Seattle Mariners a deep hole. Even another three-hit night by Ichiro Suzuki couldn't save them.

     Miller, who missed all of the 2003 season and much of 2004 because of a variety of injuries, has discovered that pitching isn't like riding a bike. When you miss time and have had shoulder surgery you just don't hop back up and start pedalling.

     Orlando Hudson and Vernon Wells each hit home runs and Eric Hinske came within a homer of the cycle as the Toronto Blue Jays overcame an early deficit to beat the Seattle Mariners 8-6 on Thursday. Suzuki had three hits for Seattle, raising his season total to 217. He remains on pace to surpass George Sisler's 1920 record of 257 hits in a single season.

     And in last night's 8-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners before an announced crowd of 23,374 at the open SkyDome, File, 1-0, pitched 11/3 innings in relief of starter Justin Miller to earn his first victory in the majors since 2001.
     
     
     
   • Geoff Baker:
     
     
     File's relief effort also provided him another chance to help Justin Miller, a pitcher still feeling his way back from a serious shoulder operation and a hamstring injury that sidelined him earlier this season. The two are close friends and File, who missed most of 2002 with a shoulder problem, has seen Miller through his fight back from identical arm surgery that kept him out last year.
     
     
     
   
   
   
   
2. Fordin Notes on pitchers Ryan Glynn, Sean Douglass, Kerry Ligtenberg, and Josh Towers:
   
   
   The skipper knows significantly more about Towers, including the exact nature of his injury. Gibbons saw Towers pitching through pain, and decided that it was a brave but altogether unnecessary move.
   
   "There's a little strain there, a muscle near his shoulder blade. We're going to nip it in the bud," said Gibbons. "You look at where we're at in the year, how much time is left, and it makes sense. It's been nagging him. What good's it going to do him [to pitch]? What good's it going to do the team?"
   
   
   
   
3. Rutsey Notes on who will be taking Towers' spot in the rotation:
   
   
   Taking his spot on Sunday will be 30-year-old right-hander Ryan Glynn, who was signed as a free agent on June 2 from the Atlanta Braves.
   
   Since being acquired by the Jays, Glynn was moved from the bullpen into a starting role at triple-A Syracuse and in 16 starts has gone 7-2 with a 3.40 earned-run average.
   
   Following the game last night, Glynn, along with shortstop Russ Adams and first baseman Eric Crozier, had their contracts purchased from Syracuse, with catcher Guillermo Quiroz recalled from Syracuse.
   
   
   
   
4. Yes, Richard Griffin, the Jays do have chance of losing 100 games:
   
   
   If the Blue Jays somehow manage to avoid losing 90 games in this most disappointing of seasons, they would have a slim chance of convincing fans they were the victims of unfortunate circumstance.
   
   At the opposite end of the spectrum, if the Jays lose 100 games, even the most loyal ticket holders will become a tough sell.
   
   
   I can't really argue with this. The Jays marketing department is going to have to work pretty hard to get people into the seats next year.

6. We've heard a lot about Ichiro trying to break George Sisler's single-season hit record. The Star's "Ichiro gets a history lesson" discusses Ichiro's pursuit of the record.
