AAA mainstays Pete Orr, Pierre-Luc (Pete) Laforest and the incomparable Stubby Clapp each drove in two runs. Leftfielder Jeff Guiel was the defensive star with two assists - one to cut down an opponent trying to stretch a single and another (with the relay by shortstop Danny Klassen) to get a runner trying to score on a double that short-hopped the wall. Mike Johnson tossed 7 scoreless innings, allowing but four hits. Chris Mears and Aaron Myette mopped up to preserve the shutout.
Taipei committed 4 errors, which ruined a solid performance by starter Chih Chia Chang of the Seibu Lions (Japanese League). Chang went 6 innings striking out 9, allowing 3 runs only 1 earned.
Italy, Canada's next opponent, were blasted by Japan 12-0, after the mercy rule was invoked (game stopped if one team is leading by more than 10 after 7 innings or later).
