July ended with a Syracuse win and an Auburn loss. Youneverknow, but I do know that the affiliates continued their fine overall play with a 5-2 record on Saturday.

The Sky Chiefs relied on fine pitching from Ryan Glynn, Aquilino Lopez and Jason Kershner to edge the Red Wings. Glynn went 6.1 innings allowing 1 earned run on 5 hits and 2 walks with 6 strikeouts. Lopez went 1.2 perfect innings with no Ks, and Kershner pitched a solid ninth for his 3rd save. Julius Matos homered, singled and walked. Anton French reached base 3 times and stole 2 bases for the 2nd consecutive game. Russ Adams went 1-5 and stole his 4th base of the season, while Gabe Gross went 2-4 with a walk. Guillermo Quiroz did not play.

Portland 1 New Hampshire 8
Gustavo Chacin pitched 6 shutout innings and John Hattig hit his first two homers with New Hampshire, as the Fisher Cats trounced the Sea Dogs to move into sole possession of 1st place. The park was sold out for the 2nd straight day. Chacin gave up 4 hits and walked 2 while striking out 3. Jamie Vermilyea went 2 hitless innings, while walking and striking out 1. John Ogiltree and Jordan DeJong finished up in the ninth. Aaron Hill went 3-3 with 2 doubles and a sac fly and drove in 3, while Mikael Jova and Justin Singleton also homered.

Sarasota 5 Dunedin 15
The D-Jays banged out 19 hits, including 3 homers, to rout the S-Sox. Raul Tablado doubled, homered and drove in 4, Big Vito walked, singled, homered and drove in 3 and Ron Davenport had the most impresssive line with 4 hits, including a homer. Carlo Cota also had 4 hits. Shaun Marcum started and went 5 innings for the win. Characteristically, he walked nobody and struck out 6, but he did give up 3 runs on 2 homers. Tracy Thorpe and Tommi Ozuna pitched 2 solid innings each to close it out.

The Alley-Cats scored 2 runs in the eighth to complete a comeback from an early 4-0 deficit. Christian Snavely homered and drove in 2 to lead the offence. Davis Romero started and went 6 innings, giving up 4 runs in the first inning and then shut 'em down. He allowed 4 hits and 3 walks, and struck out 4. Joaquin Canizal upped his record to 7-1 going 2 shutout innings, allowing 2 baserunners and striking out 2, while Mark Sopko allowed 2 baserunners in the ninth, but emerged unscathed for his 7th save.

It was a rare off-night for the Doubledays, as the pitchers struggled, the fielders made 5 errors and the hitters couldn't put together any kind of a rally. Juan Perez started and took the loss to drop to 4-1. He went 5 innings and allowed 7 runs, 4 earned, on 10 hits and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts. Kristian Bell and Scott Roy finished up nicely. Curtis Thigpen and Jarad Mangioni had 2 hits each, while 3rd baseman Jason Armstrong had a night he would just as soon forget, wearing the collar and making 3 errors to boot.

Pulaski 2 Kingsport 0- 2nd game
The P-Jays split a doubleheader with Kingsport. In the opener, Russ Savickas was touched for 4 runs in the 2nd inning (his last). Savickas gave up 5 hits and 1 walk and struck out 1. Reymon Sanchez, who struck out 5 in 3 innings, and Edward Rodriguez finished up. Yuber Rodriguez went 1-3 with a walk and drove in a run. In the nightcap, Derek Tate threw 5.1 shutout innings, striking out 10(!) while allowing 4 hits and no walks. Tate lowered his ERA for the season to 1.10. Aaron Tressler got the save, pitching a perfect inning with 2 strikeouts. Junior Chourio smacked a 2 run homer for the P-Jays runs. David Hicks went 2-3.
