BBFL Week 16: Mebion Glyndwr, Red Mosquitos Charging

Another week, another narrow — and fortunate — decision for my front-running Toronto Walrus. Mebion Glyndwr stormed into second place with a strong Sunday and a 9-3 victory over the Moscow Rats. AGF lost 9-2 to Garces_not_on_roids and fell from second to fourth in the standings, as the Red Mosquitos stung the gashouse gorillas 10-2 to take over third.

The Eastern Shore Birds moved up a notch to fifth by edging the SABR Magicians 6-5, and hannibal's cannibals are now sixth, after defeating Baird Brain by the same score. Six other teams are grouped within just five games of that final spot in the championship playoff bracket, so these last six weeks of the regular season will be critical.

The scramble to avoid relegation really heated up this week, as the Thunderbirds, who had been teetering on the brink, bounced back to pound Reykjavik 11-1 and drop the Fish Candy back into a precarious position. Only five and a half games separate six teams from 14th to 19th place, as you can see:

  # Team W-L-T Pct GB

4 AGF 102-80-10 .557 12.5
5 Eastern Shore Birds 100-86-6 .536 16.5
6 hannibal's cannibals 96-83-13 .534 17
7 Baird Brain 97-87-8 .526 18.5
8 gashouse gorillas 96-87-9 .523 19
9 Horse Field Hammers 96-89-7 .518 20
10 Chatsworth Halos 95-91-6 .510 21.5
11 Austin Senators 91-88-13 .508 22
12 Moscow Rats 95-92-5 .508 22
13 Billie's Bashers 92-95-5 .492 25
14 Garces_not_on_roids 88-99-5 .471 29
15 SABR Magicians 84-98-10 .464 30.5
16 Reykjavik Fish Candy 84-102-6 .453 32.5
17 Thunderbirds 83-103-6 .448 33.5
18 K-Town Mashers 80-100-12 .448 33.5
19 Springfield Isotopes 79-101-12 .443 34.5
20 Jick's Rays 53-128-11 .305 61
Rules are rules, and luck is luck. My team got credit for a 7-4 victory over the Bashers, whose decimated pitching staff once again failed to meet the weekly IP requirement, erasing 5 SV and costing R Billie another valuable game in the standings. The score should have been 6-5, but for some reason, Yahoo wipes out counting stats, not just rate stats. I'll gladly accept the gift, which doesn't mean it's fair — I'd turn it down if I could.

Usually this is where I praise my next opponent and say how happy I’ll be with a split. That’s not the case this week — I’m just hoping to avoid getting blown out by Spicol’s juggernaut. If we’d met last week, the final would have been 9-2 for the red hot Skeeters, so unless a few of my hitters get in gear this week, a big chunk of that 10.5 game lead could evaporate in a hurry.
