--> Carlos Tosca must have been on top of the world yesterday, as he was named to the All-Star coaching squad. Many of us have had our criticisms of Tosca this year, but I trust no one would begrudge a longtime baseball man a moment of tremendous glory like this. Kudos to Joe Torre for not simply inviting the usual suspects again this year (Tony Pena is also on the squad, another classy move).
--> Less good is the news that Frank Catalanotto is probably headed back to the disabled list. The Jays reacquired former Toronto farmhand Anthony Sanders last night from the Rockies and assigned him to Syracuse, suggesting that the Skychiefs may soon be short an outfielder. Might we see Marvin Benard in a Toronto uniform tomorrow?
--> No matter how long you’ve been following the game, you never get tired of how excited young players are when they get promoted to The Show. Adam Peterson’s arrival in Toronto is Exhibit A, as this nice Fordin article indicates. The thought of a rookie pitcher pulling out his own baseball cards in an effort to get across the border is reason enough to smile, but Peterson’s infectious enthusiasm just adds to it. More good news: Skychiefs shortstop Russ Adams has been selected for the Major-League Baseball Futures Game. Congratulations, Russ!
--> An afternoon game today, as the Jays and Rays battle for the series win. Red-hot lefty Ted Lilly suits up for Toronto, while another southpaw, one-time Mariner prospect John Halama, tries to start a new winning streak for Tampa. Game time is 12:35 pm.
