Minor League Update-June 6, 2004

The farm affiliates won 3 of 4 on Saturday, with only New Hampshire ending up on the short end of the stick.

Charlotte 4 Syracuse 5

Stubby Clapp's run-scoring double in the 8th inning broke a 4-4 tie, as the Sky Chiefs defeated the Knights 5-4. Ryan Glynn started for Syracuse and went 3.2 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 3 walks with 4 strikeouts. Talley Haines picked him up with 3.1 innings of 1 hit ball with 0 walks and 4 strikeouts, and left with the lead. Mark Lukasiewicz gave up a run in the eighth, but got the win courtesy of Stubby. Mike Nakamura pitched the ninth and gave up a hit and quickly took care of that by inducing a double play; he receipted for his first save. Russ Adams went 2-3 with a sacrifice bunt. Marvin Benard doubled and singled with 2 ribbies. Gabe Gross doubled and walked in 4 plate appearances, and Jeff Guiel hit a solo homer.

Portland 14 New Hampshire 6

The Sea Dogs scored 3 runs in the 1st inning, and 9 in the 3rd to take a 12-0 lead, and were never headed. Gustavo Chacin's statistics took a major beating: 2.1 innings, 10 earned runs on 7 hits and 6 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Jordan DeJong and Dan Jackson finished the game. Aaron Hill and Danny Solano doubled and singled in 4 plate appearances for the Fisher Cats. John-Ford Griffin doubled and walked.

Tampa 2 Dunedin 6

The Baby Jays scored 4 runs early and coasted to a 6-2 win behind the fine pitching of Ismael Ramirez and the hot bat of Raul Tablado. Justin Speier started and went a scoreless inning allowing 1 hit and striking out 1. Ramirez came on and went the next 7 innings and gave up 2 earned runs on 6 hits and 1 walks with 7 strikeouts. Bubbie Buzachero pitched a scoreless ninth, but did not strike out anybody. Tablado went 3-3 with a walk and drove in 2, and John Schneider hit a 2 run homer to lead the D-Jay offence. Chris Woodward doubled in 4 plate appearances, and Ron Davenport returned to the lineup and produced immediately with 2 hits.

Charleston 9 Kannapolis 2

The Alley-Cats fell behind early, but erupted for 9 runs in the 5th inning for the victory. Clint Johnson had a 3-run double and Mike Galloway hit a 3 run homer to cap the inning. Justin James went 5 innings, and gave up 2 runs, 1 unearned on his own error, on 5 hits and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts. Felix Romero pitched 2 very nice relief innings- 2 hits, no walks, 4 strikeouts. Marcos Sandoval and Brad Esarey mopped up. Eric Arnold had 3 hits and Johnston and Christian Snavely 2 each. Ryan Roberts went 1-3 and was lifted when the game got out of hand.
