Time's running out in the playoff races. There were no changes in the standings last week among the top six teams, but fifth place Nation Builders solidified their position (by routing my hapless Walrus 7-3) and Mebion Glyndwr extended their tenuous 1.5 game hold on the final championship-round slot to 4.5 games with an 8-4 win over the Springfield Isotopes.
It's still anybody's guess what will happen in the battle for the consolation round, with ten teams separated by a mere four games; there's room for only six of them in the postseason. Jicks Rays vaulted from 11th to seventh with an 8-4 win over Chatsworth, dropping the Halos from eighth to 11th. The remarkable stretch run by the Thunderbirds continued with a 6-5 win over Billies Bashers, but the T-birds have another tough test this week against the league leaders. AGF made up some ground by defeating second-place Baird Brain 7-4. The Eastern Shore Birds, who dropped a 7-4 decision to the Fish Candy and slipped back to .500, remain in the hunt. All of this week's matchups (a repeat of the Week 2 schedule) are magnified in importance.
# Team W-L-T Win % GBLast week, I said I had no excuses. This week, I blame my "hitters" for an embarrassing 244/313/350 performance -- Scott Spiezio was my leading "slugger" and Jhonny Peralta had the best OBP, fercryinoutloud. Losing Milton Bradley, quite possibly for the season, was a crushing blow; a few weeks ago I told someone I had a 15% chance of winning the T-shirt, but the Walrus is about a 50-1 shot right now. If it wasn't for that darned minimum-innings requirement, I'd go to a two-man pitching staff of Schilling and Wagner. Everyone else is hurt and/or unreliable.[/whine]
