Apologies to Bill Simmons, who is probably the best of the best at ESPN.com, but only very occasionally fills the role of "baseball writer."

I love it when Primer posts a Bill Simmons article, and they refer to him as "Basketball writer Bill Simmons"

I voted for Neyer, but that may not have been fair. He used to be my favourite, but now that he's insider, Gammons is insider, the chats are insider, there's almost no reason to go to ESPN. I visit this page and read the writers here far more often than ESPN... same with the Hardball Times and Spencer Fordin. Perhaps the next poll could take the top two vote getters from this poll, throw in Griffin, Rosenthal, Fordin, maybe someone from the HardBall times... that'd be interesting.

One more thing... what happened to Eric Neel?

Last year he had a regular column that I liked, but I think the last baseball thing he did this year was the "Face of Baseball" article.

I voted for Morgan for kicks. Seriously though, with Gammons moving to ESPN Insider, there really isn't much reason to go to espn.com anymore. I guess Ken Rosenthal will have to be my new Gammons.

Speaking of ESPN.com, did anyone notice the somewhat odd play described on the play-by-play of the Houston/LA game?

"B Ausmus singled to right, J Lane thrown out at home, M Ensberg scored, J Lane to third advancing on play."

I stopped visiting for the same reason -- the interesting-looking articles were all pay-only. I didn't vote.

The amount of free articles/blogs that use to be on ESPN.com 2 years ago compared today is staggering.

The ESPN.com baseball section might as well be renamed Insider Baseball.

ESPN.com in general is going more insider with each passing month. Perhaps the subscribers complained too much stuff was free for the general public.

I suspect it has more to do with ESPN realizing they can maximize revenue with more writers behind the subscription wall.

Gammons is now an insider too? He was the only reason left to load espn. Their site often crashes my browser. The only one that does that.

If Gitz and Lucas were listed I'd have voted for one of them.

I voted for Gammons, and it's as much a lifetime achievement award as anything. You young pups have no idea how much he raised the bar for baseball reporting back in the 1970s - he was about the only intelligent guy out there. Bill Simmons will back me up on this:

Back in the late-70's, 80's and early-90's, when he was writing his groundbreaking column for The Boston Globe every Sunday, he would take an occasional week off … only there was no way of knowing until you opened the paper, looked for his column and realized somebody else had written it. And every time it happened, I would groan out loud.

He really was that essential. So maybe I cut him too much slack these days, I dunno. Curse you, ESPN!

Perhaps "best" in this case means "most entertaining," in the sense that the oft-discussed Plan Nine From Outer Space is one of the best movies ever.

I think the version of Flash Gordon with the crazy early '80s Italian high fashion costumes and photography and music by Queen (and with Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless) kicks the ass of Plan Nine From Outer Space. Of course, that Flash Gordon was written by the guy who was the head writer for the Adam West Batman TV show, so it's probably campy on purpose, but it's played so straight that it amuses me to no end.

Gammons? Please. Theo Epstein has boxer shorts that aren't as close to him as Gammons is... He's a kiss ass.
