A 2 and 2 night on the farm, with the 3 Stars brought to you by the letter C.

Toledo 7 Syracuse 2

The Sky Chiefs took one on the chin last night, with Ryan Glynn absorbing most of the punishment. Glynn gave up 6 earned runs in 6 innings on 8 hits (including 3 doubles and 3 homers) and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts. Bryant Nelson walked softly and carried the big stick, with a homer and an RBI single. Aaron Hill went 2-4 and is now hitting .319.

Portland 2 @ New Hampshire 4

Ismael Ramirez and David Pauley faced off and put up nearly identical lines – each with 3 hits and 2 runs allowed in 7 innings, Ramirez 4/2 on the K/BB, Applebon 5/1. But while Jordan De Jong and Lee Gronkiewicz backed up Ramirez with 2 innings of spotless relief, the Portland ‘pen coughed up 2 runs in the 8th inning.

2B Carlo Cota was the fiercest Cat in the contest, smacking a double and a triple. RF Ron Acuna also trotted out a three-bagger, while LF Ron Davenport preferred to jog, so he hit it right over the wall. Running? We’ve got that too: SS Raul Tablado and catcher Eric Kratz each stole a base.

Dunedin 9 @ Brevard County 3

The Jays scored 3 runs in the 2nd and 5 in the 4th for a decisive win over the Manatees. It was more “long-sequence” offense than “big-blast”, as 2B Ryan Roberts, C Robinzon Diaz, DH Clint Johnston, and 1B Joey Reiman all had 2 base knocks – Johnston being the most impressive of these as his line included a double and 2 walks.

On the mount, Dave Purcey was effectively wild, walking 4 but striking out 6 and surrendering only 2 hits in his 6 innings. He was charged 2 unearned runs following an error by SS Manny Mayorson in the 3rd, and an earnie in the 6th. Brian Reed, Brad Mumma, and Milton Tavarez all read the same memo (written in binary?) and went out and tossed 1 inning, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strikeout.

Southwest Michigan 7 @ Lansing 2

Another tough outing for Juan Perez as SWM (Single white males? Somebody call Geoff Baker!) included a homer amongst 10 baserunners in his 5 innings. This netted the Devil Rays 6 runs, 5 earned, and Perez’ record dropped to 2-3 with a 6.51 ERA. Jordy Templet allowed both runners he inherited to score, and Adrian Martin was touched for a solo homer. Templet and Martin each pitched 2 innings.

Catcher Curtis Thigpen was the best Lugnut hitter this night, clubbing a homer and a single in addition to drawing a walk. SS Jason Armstrong also had two hits, and 3B Christian Snavely took 2 free passes.

The bats have been very very quiet in Lanising all weekend. Had it not been for a huge pinch hit homer on Friday by Wolfe and an outstanding pitching performance by Janssen on Sunday, they very well could have been swept. Yuber is back in the lead off role, but he just isn't getting on base. He has been robbed a couple of times as far as hits goes, but he swings at alot of bad pitches, trying to be aggresive.

The pen has really struggled as well. Outside of Hill and Harang, you kind of have to hold your breathe everytime they bring someone in. As far as roster moves, the Lansing State Journal is reporting that Eric Rico was released last night and Adrian Martin was sent to extended spring.

"Uh, I think Syracuse played Toledo yesterday:"

Doug Creek got the win for the Mud Hens so we're all trying to pretend the game never happened.

Thanks, Jacko. It's now fixed.

According to the Dunedin website, Danny Core and Jeremy Harper were moved down to Lansing to open spots for Janssen and Buzachero.

I guess that's why Rico and Martin were given the boot.

Hi, I'm new to the box but I've been reading it on and off since about July, so I'm sorry if this has already been discussed at length or if someone thinks this is a dumb question. From what I've heard, the park in New Hampshire is a pitchers' park, and most of the discussion has revolved around how it hurts the numbers of the hitters....would that mean that JP and the rest of management looks more at the numbers on the road? Furthermore, wouldn't it skew the statistics of the pitchers as well since home runs turn into fly balls? Of course we can examine K:BB to examine command of the strike zone but there isn't really a way (that I know of) of quantifying possible mistake pitches that would normally be crushed for home runs into fly ball outs. I'm just curious because I read something about Scott Downs and how impressive his numbers were in the PCL last year given the altitude in many of the parks. Should we qualify the numbers of pitchers given that they play in New Hampshire? This is obviously extreme but do we just throw out the home stats altogether? I have some idea about how badly Coors Field skews statistics but I don't know how much New Hampshire skews the stats. Sorry the length and rambling.

They have a new stadium in New Hampshire, which has favoured pitchers over the first month. This affects the meaning of both pitchers and hitters statistics so far.

Kevin Pataky advises us that a hotel is being built just past the left-field wall, which will likely change the wind patterns. Any longer term judgment about the effect of the park will have to wait.

A strange yet interesting story from the Toronto Sun today, entitled Fisher Cats have plan. It's about, of all things, the NHL lockout.

Fisher Cats president/general manager Shawn Smith said, "As an affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, the only Canadian team left in Major League Baseball, we feel an obligation to do what we can to help our parent club's home city and country. Hockey is to Canada as baseball is to the United States. We are all anticipating the end of this lockout."

The Fisher Cats beat the Portland Sea Dogs last night 4-2, not the Rock Cats as it says at the top of this thread. Also the link to the box score is wrong. Here is the correct one.

I think left handed hitters will be able to succeed at this park in Manchester - they just really don't have many right now. Its 306 down the right field line - Robert Cosby popped a flyball over the wall for his first homer there on Sunday. Right center is only 353 feet. John-Ford Griffin would have gone nuts in this park.

Left field is a bit more spacious at 326 down the line and 380 to left center - and center field is 400 ft away with a huge batters eye on top of it. True they are building a hotel behind the left field wall that is right on top of the park, but the park borders the Merrimack River along the 3rd base side, and the wind comes in off of that across the left field stands and foul pole and pushes to the right field pole. They need more left handed hitters and left handed pitchers on this team.

In the games I was listening to earlier in the season, it seemed that the wind was blowing in from left-field more than from left to right. That might be changing.

Thanks for the Syracuse update, Mike. I did look at the sched, but was apparently mistaken in my conclusion that Syracuse had the day off.

Thanks for the New Hampshire correction, KPataky, I've now corrected the article.
