Moises Alou signs with the Giants to play for his father. Feliz Navidad, Felipe.

Today's QOTD is:

Which extended family has had the most members in organized pro baseball (major and minor leagues) in North America? If you don't want to try the puzzler, then how about telling us about your favourite baseball family?

The Alous would have had at least 4, Jesus, Matty, Felipe and Moises, but I'll bet there is a family out with more.

From the Boston Globe, COMN.

Any takers?

You'd have to include Mel Rojas in with the Alou clan. I believe he is Felipe's nephew.

As for favourite baseball family, well, the '79 Pirates come to mind. They were, after all, family...

Are only blood relatives eligible. What about relatives through marriage?

And if so, are Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich officially related? :)
Mike Green - Thursday, December 23 2004 @ 11:29 AM EST (#6382) #
And if so, are Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich officially related? :)

Peterson/Kekich (Sex) and "We are Family" Pirates (Drugs). Jack McDowell didn't have a ballplayer brother, did he? Ian Dury lives!

How many Boones were there in baseball? Ray, Bob, Bret, Aaron. Anybody else?
Coach - Thursday, December 23 2004 @ 11:59 AM EST (#6383) #
I can't think of a quintet, but the three-generation Bells are tied with the Boones -- grandpa Gus, Buddy and David, whose brother Mike had a brief career.

Marriage, even without wife-swapping, can complicate the relationships. For example, Jayson Werth's dad Dennis played, and married Dick Schofield's daughter. Counting both Duckys, that's four I know of.

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of Too Many Molinas!
Gitz - Thursday, December 23 2004 @ 12:04 PM EST (#6384) #
Thank you, Coach, for that needed morning laugh. Too Many Molinas! Good stuff.

Maybe I'm wrong here ... but wasn't there another Boone other than Bret and Aaron? I seem to recall a third one going to USC and getting drafted, but my memory gets worse every second. (What did I just say?)
robertdudek - Thursday, December 23 2004 @ 12:11 PM EST (#6385) #
I believe it's the Hairstons. I think - four major leaguers and one minor leaguer. If we give Rojas to the Alous it's a tie (so far).
Coach - Thursday, December 23 2004 @ 12:17 PM EST (#6386) #
Too Many Molinas! Good stuff.

Gitz, all the credit for our favourite imaginary sitcom should go to Jobu. I was just trying to set him up for an open shot, not that he needs much encouragement. :)
_Mick - Thursday, December 23 2004 @ 12:43 PM EST (#6387) #
Matt Boone (I think) never made the majors. but was with the Rangers organization. Or was that Matt Bell? (You can see why I'd be confused.)

I believe the Delahantys had six in the big leagues, yes?

Jose Rijo and Juan Marichal (son in law/Father in law) might have been the best pitching duo, apologies to the Deans. The best family, well how can you argue with -- and this feels silly just to write it -- a thousand home runes>? Bobby and Barry. I don't think Bobby Jr. ever made the show, did he?
_Daryn - Thursday, December 23 2004 @ 01:45 PM EST (#6388) #
The Alou's are MUCH bigger than you mention, because as the Rojas and SEVERAL others are connected, quite directly...

Bigger even than the Sutters of hockey...

The Ripkens had 3 on the same team (one a coach), more or less the "Howe's" of baseball... and I think two Molina's both catching is pretty cool....

3-Alomar's but not together... The McRae's playing(coaching) together.... The Ken Griffeys both on the field together.. is pretty cool... and the DiMaggio's..

none of those are very BIG families though, just interesting...
I think you'll have a hard time beating the Alou's once you find them all...

How about a Blue Jay connection, The Stottlemyres. I don't know if there was more then Mel Jr & Sr. and Todd but to get the Jays in there.

Here's a neat piece of Alou family trivia. In 1966, Matty Alou, batting leadoff for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was the first hitter to come to the plate in the history of Atlanta's Fulton County stadium, while Felipe Alou, batting leadoff for the Braves, became the first Brave to come to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Thirty years later in 1996, the Expos' Moises Alou was the last hitter to come to the plate, flying out to end the final regular season game played at Fulton County stadium. And just for good measure, Felipe Alou, Moises' dad and manager, became the last manager to lose a regular season game in Fulton County stadium !

No, I'm in Canada (and sans dish). I've just heard it a million times.

On the topic of ESPN, I was in Florida earlier this month and "got to" watch ESPN. What a frustrating lot! Buster Olney is even more annoying in person than in print.

"while also picking through offers for both of their first basemen, Kevin Millar and Doug Mientkiewicz, one of whom almost certainly will be traded."

Anyone know how much Mientkiewicz makes, if the jays could get him he'd be a much better FB than Hinske .238/.326/.350
The numbers arent great but he only made 2.6 million last year so he can be a reliable option.
He's got good speed for a FB, walks almost as much as he strikes out 48BB -56K

Here are some other contenders for the largest baseball extended family: the Hairstons, the Bells and the Walkers. Richard Dawson, are you available to ask the questions? :)
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, December 23 2004 @ 07:22 PM EST (#6401) #
I'd rather have Millar, personally.

Crozier can be our defensive relacement at 1B, if that's ever necessary.

Actually, I'd rather just give the job to Crozier. Meh, got nothing to lose. Even if he does break the ML record for strikeouts.
_Jabonoso - Thursday, December 23 2004 @ 07:50 PM EST (#6402) #
One thing about the Alou's ive already commented in this site is that their family name is Rojas. But inmigration made a mistake with Felipe, giving his mother name as first one. The fact is that Moises is no Alou at all.
Felipe was the first Dominican to play regularly in the bigs ( what a door he did open )
There are 17 families that have given three or more brothers:
Delahanty ( five ) and O'Neil ( four ) are leaders. But no family has had three brothers batting one-two-three ever. They did twicw for the Giants ( and tougher to beat: in order, from the the younger to the older )

Ladies and gentlemen we have somewhat disturbing news that occured yesterday in Tarpon Springs, Fl, the 3rd Blue Jays in less than 3 months has died. Doug Ault according to reports has committed suicide either late last night or early this morning. It seems things do happen in 3's Cerruti, Mattick and Ault.

Can you give a source for this, please (I can't find it on the wire or in Google News with search) so I can start an appropriate thread?

Shouldn't somebody be making the obligatory reference to Boog, the lesser known Alou?

They also had a Cuban cousin named Bob.

the all-Jays family team

Olerud's dad was a minor-league ballplayer who was mentioned in Ball Four.

Jose Rijo and Juan Marichal (son in law/Father in law) might have been the best pitching duo, apologies to the Deans.

They aren't better than the Perrys.

Who is the only SECOND generation Blue Jay.

I should know this.

The answer to the second generation Trivia question.......... can be found at SS generation One, and............. of for generation two....
_Mick - Thursday, December 23 2004 @ 11:14 PM EST (#6410) #
They aren't better than the Perrys.

Or, come to think of it, the Niekros. Though of the eight pitchers mentioned, Marichal was the best and Rijo at his peak was better than everyone else at their peak, except Marichal, G. Perry and D. Dean.

Yes, Schofield and Werth....in all ranges of definitions are a first a second generation, not father and son.

It's shocking that news item would be reflected in Wikipedia, which gratned is updated daily, before it appears in any news source anywhere we would expect to find it.

Good work finding the link. But like any journalist would tell you -- and in this case, this is news we don't want to get wrong -- you need two independently verifiable sources and even the places Wikipedia links to don't have this information (BBRef, etc.)

More to the point, we certainly won't feature anything speculative about suicide or any other cause of death without confirmation.

Thanks for the first step, though.

_Mick - Friday, December 24 2004 @ 11:25 PM EST (#6422) #
Thank you, James. As a personal friend of the Ault family, I'm sure you can appreciate that we're not going to splash this news on our front page without independent verfication from a credible public news source. Blogs are all about the links to other information and the editprial commentary that follows; I think without exception, we've never "broken" a news story on Batter's Box nor would we wish to start now. IAs I recall, one of our roster members heard about Cerutti from a credible off-the-record source before it hit the wire but we held that thread until it was public and this situation at the very least merits that.

Please pass along our sympathies to the younger Ault lad and if you find (or hear about so we can locate) a public news source, please pass it along.

I applaud the Baux leaders for not going forward with this, 3 days after the supposed event, nothing has been made public. Color me still skeptical, I really hope someone hasn't sunken so low, to make up such a thing. but also hope such a thing has not really happened to the Ault family.

But there is much that while I cannot give, you can take.

No Heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in it today.
Take Heaven.

No peace lies in us today that is not hidden in this present instant.
Take peace.

The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our reach, is joy. Take joy.

And now, forever, our prayer for you is as the day breaks, the shadows flee away."

Jayson Werth's dad Dennis played, and married Dick Schofield's daughter.

kind of depends on if we're only counting blood relatives, then ... Dennis was Jayson's stepfather.

Brings to mind the famous case of Glenn and Storm Davis ... grew up in the same household, may have been foster brothers, but Glenn was not related by blood to that Davis family, just happened to share the same name.
