A few days ago, the team that will go to Athens in the hopes of winning a medal for Canada was announced.

As expected the Syracuse Skychiefs will lose 3 regulars to the Canadian team, and will likely lose a fourth to the Australian side. A few notable absentees: Shawn Hill, pitching with the Expos and Maxim St. Pierre of the Tigers organisation. Justin Morneau is up with the Twins now, but his presence on the roster indicates that the Twins may accomodate and send him down in time. Possibly the most intriguing player to make the team is one of the top pitching prospects in baseball - Jeff Francis.

Here they are:

If the Twins can afford to lose Morneau, it's a shame Rich Harden won't be joining him. When will Oakland realise that their silly pennant race means nothing compared to the OLYMPICS!!!

An ominous bit from Peter Gammon's ESPN column today (COMN for the whole thing):

Colorado has until July 31 to decide whether or not LHP Jeff Francis can pitch in the Olympics for Canada, but the Rockies are leaning toward bringing him up during the season for a couple of starts. Talk about special.

Right below that bit is his take on the Delgado situation. I note that he thinks a good postseason would get his asking price "closer to eight figures" - a pretty good indication of just how far his stock has plummeted this year.

I think that not letting Jeff play in the Olympics was short-sighted on the part of the Rockies.

One piece of good news: Canada beat Cuba in an Olympic tune-up game yesterday.

The win over Cuba is big even though it was a tune-up.
A silver medal is very possible but DREAM TEAM JAPAN has the gold already sewn up. (but we can dream big)

Colorado announced that Francis will pitch in the majors, beginning with their Aug. 24-26 series.

DREAM TEAM JAPAN has the gold already sewn up.

... in the same way that DREAM TEAM CANADA wins the hockey gold every four years, I think.

When does the Olympic baseball tournament go from-until?

Because that seems like a long time in the future that Francis is getting called up. If the tournamnet ends on the 23rd or something, Francis could get back to Colorado Springs, pitch on like the 28th to reaccustom him to the minors and be up in Colorado pitching for the Rockies in September, starting on the 3rd. It seems like Colorado has prevented Francis from pitching in the Olympics for an extra two starts (or maybe one if you brought him straight up to the majors).
Thomas - Thursday, August 12 2004 @ 03:33 PM EDT (#40104) #
To answer my own question, the tournament goes from August 15-25th. So, assuming Francis starts the final for Canada (if not, he'd get back to the US even sooner) and he starts on the 25th for Colorado than he's on the same cycle. So yes, Colorado elected for one or two major league starts over a trip to the Olympics. Again, I think that's a classless move.

Mick! Japan has an outstanding professional league which is actually allowing its players to play at the Olympics. If you are unaware of the talent in Japan, just ask the Major League All-Stars about their series in Japan last year. The MLB players were beaten soundly. These young Japanese players make a name for themselves in Japan and then move on to greener pastures...have you heard of Ichiro, Matsui, Sasaki, or Nomo (to name a few). There are players with their potentials on Team Japan 2004.

You can't compare hockey to baseball. Canada is not the only country with the best players in the world. Russia, Sweden, USA, and Finland all have their fair share of superstars. Baseball has great players from many countries too but not many that will be represented in Athens (maybe only Cuba and Japan). I think Canada won't win gold at the World hockey tournament just as Canada won't win gold in baseball at the Olympics.

When Japan DOESN'T win gold at the Athens Olympics, I will eat crow.

You can't compare hockey to baseball.

You certainly can't. Baseball is much *less* predictable.

The Japanese team is a fine one and should be the favourite, even if the Central and Pacific Leagues are of AAA caliber.

If you didn't see today's game against Chinese Taipei, Canada won 7-0. This game would have been a lot closer had it not been for several excellent defensive plays by Canada. I'll mention Ryan Radmanovich's catch on the warning track in right field as an example.

The final out of the game was a Taiwan player thrown out at home, preserving the shutout. Why did they send this guy home when they were down seven runs?
