Welcome to the I had to get up at 4:30 to drive someone to the train station edition of Jays Roundup. Thanks to Homsar for the lyrics suggestion.

In a game not televised on regular cable TV, the Jays shut out the Padres 3-0 behind a strong pitching performance by Miguel Batista. The Orioles won as well, so the Jays are still tied for fourth, 9.5 games back of the Red Sox for the Wildcard spot.

  1. Want to learn more about yesterday's game? Try Spencer Fordin's "Batista pens gem in finale", Mike Scarr's "Lawrence throws gem, but no W", Jeff Blair's "Toronto gets comfy in San Diego's new stadium", Bernie Wilson's "Jays blank Padres", and AP's "Batista blanks Padres".

  2. Fordin Notes on Chulk's good outing yesterday and Cat's health. It looks like Cat might be going back on the DL. I'm not sure who they'd call up if Cat goes on the DL. Any suggestions?

  3. Geoff Baker also examines the superb pitching of Vinnie Chulk in "Chulk one up for Triple-A callup".

  4. In non-Jays news "Junior homers to hit 500".

  5. Here's a followup to a story that's been getting a lot of attention lately: "Lone Starr baseball bully's just dessert: Spectators cry `foul' over fan gone bad" by Garth Woolsey.

  6. There's no game today. On Tuesday the Jays will be starting a three game series against the Devil Rays in Toronto. The pitching matchups: Tuesday - Gaudin vs. Hentgen, Wednesday - Zambrano vs. Halladay, Thursday - Halama vs. Lilly.

Secret lives of the cuttlefish?

Heh heh heh. I like it!

No Mr. Censor, that isn't cuttlefish porn.. it's a nature show!

Unfortunately I didn't get to see or listen to the game, but I'm sure that if newly-acquired reliever Ricky STONE got in the game, the Jays would have ended up smelling like ROSES.

I'm too busy to come up with anything unclever for Love Spreads....

In non-Jays news "Junior homers to hit 500".

You know, that's a much better headline than the "Junior fails to hit 500 again" headlines we've been getting for the past month.

Speaking of TV, I was watching Crossing Jordan last night and the following exchange occured:

Bug: Should we let him into the Cabal?
Other Examiner: What Cabal?

Are major television networks now checking out DaBox for screenplay ideas? Don't be surprised if "the secret lives of cuttlefish" ends up on discovery channel next week.

Well, unlike in Hollywood, at Da Box I can assure you that There Is No Cabal.

I'm currently reading the third installment of Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne series and there's an exchange between Bourne and his accomplice as they're trying to piece together who's part of a corrupt, underground group.

Bourne: "You mean some kind of Cabal?"

Instinctively I thought, No Jason, there is no Cabal...

My wife and I have been compiling a drinking game to go with the Jays TV broadcasts, and we've added "watercraft" in honor of Mr. Talent.

and honoured is Mr. Talent. Wow! Drinking games during the TV broadcast, that's hard core.

I make a huge effort not to be in the bathroom when Cerutti reads his scouting report for the visiting pitcher:

WATERCRAFT

Pond.

He hits the same way, and can play the same positions.

And the Jays should really do whatever they can to get themselves a big righthanded bat. Even a AAAA slugger would do. Just get somebody who can pound lefties...
_Loveshack - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 11:06 AM EDT (#46166) #
So hands up everyone who envisioned that by the end of June the Jays regular outfield would consist of Reed Johnson, Alex Rios, and Berg/Pond?

Question: How much responsibility does Ricciardi have to take in this situation, assuming Cat is now hurt (again)? Obviously no one could envision the injuries being this devasting, and the trade for Frasor so far looks great by itself. However even when everyone is healthy this team only has 3 regular outfielders plus emergency callup Rios, and Hermanson who has seemingly disappeared into the abyss. Now maybe Im not looking at all the angles (such as roster spots) but shouldnt JP have acquired a 4th outfielder by now in order to avoid having to use Berg/Pond in the outfield? This is not an accusation, I just dont know enough to know why this need isn't filled yet or why it wasnt filled as soon as Hermanson disappeared off the face of the earth.
_Scott - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 11:48 AM EDT (#46167) #
I believe Hermanson is hurt. JP did go and get Marvin Benard a month ago, but alas the Blue Jay curse got him as well and he is injured. Throw in Gross not being able to play the outfield and it is hard to imagine we would need this many outfielders.

If anybody is wondering where the all of the Blue Jay luck has gone, look no further than Dudedin, where the office manager (Pat Smith) for Toronto's Florida operations won $27 million in the state lottery recently (Bob Elliot in the sun has the story).
Craig B - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 12:11 PM EDT (#46168) #
Don't look now, but Alex Rios is hitting .357/.400/.536 in his last eight games. Is he adjusting to the majors now?

See, this is what exams will make you do....not want to study for them. I came up with a few show ideas whilst "studying":

- Jobu's Corner (his idea, I think)
- Economics with Moffatt (I needed something to fill Thursdays at 3 am)
- non-Jays stuff (Lucas, Gitz, etc..)
- something with cuttlefish
- college and minor league reports
- and of course, Blue Jays baseball, with Mike Wilner and Kent Williams

Note the absence of Dave Berg.

Saw a very interesting article on types of batted ball over at Hardball Times (COMN). Halladay was mentioned as an outlier, someone who has poorer runs allowed than might be expected by his pitching, due presumably to defense.

My wife and I have been compiling a drinking game to go with the Jays TV broadcasts

Hmm..."watercraft", "What do you think about that?", "inside for a strike"...sounds promising.

I always listen to the radio, so I have to be content with "the Blue Jays are in flight", "Hello, friends!", "The [one team] are cubing the [other team], 8-2", and "Baseball Today producer Rob PIZZO!"

Nice ideas Rob! How about a Box remake of M*A*S*H? I can see it now: Coach as Col. Potter, Craig Burley as Hawkeye, Jordan Furlong as B.J. Hunnicut, Aaron Gleeman as Radar, and yours truly as Klinger. How could that *not* get ratings?

Klinger eventually became a productive worker and was promoted...so maybe Moffatt's not a good fit. ;)

Don't worry. Me telling someone they aren't productive is like John Wasdin telling someone they can't pitch.

BTW, favourite Klinger moment: when Col. Blake reads out his past "excuses" for wanting to go home.

"Sister dying...mother dying...sister and mother dying...sister dying, mother pregnant...sister dying, older sister pregnant...half the family dying, other half pregnant."

I still managed to get a stupid amount of stuff done today.

This confused the hell out of me:
Definition of The Hahn Problem: The Hahn problem a.k.a. The Hahn (1965) question: when does there exist an equilibrium in a model in which money has positive value?

Damn, I've been using the negatively valued money lately. Never trust the homeless guy outside Fortino's to change a 50.

Damn, I've been using the negatively valued money lately. Never trust the homeless guy outside Fortino's to change a 50.

LOL

Maybe I should get that definition clarified. All it means, very roughly spealing, is when you're mathematically modelling how a market works, if you're not careful in the assumptions you make, you'll can end up in a situation where agents (people) will try to get rid of their paper money for other financial assets. Here we mean positive as opposed to zero. Or such is my understanding of it; I don't study that field. :)
_Rob - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 01:30 PM EDT (#46184) #
Ahh, too much stuff I don't understand. It started so nicely, with M*A*S*H and BBTV. Then came economics. :)
Forget this, I'm getting lunch.

I'll have to watch my bread equilibrium to make sure my calories aren't worth the opposite of positive, which is apparently zero.

Moffatt, what was that toy you posted a picture of? I don't know what they are called, but I used to have a whole set of them when I was a kid. A horse, a rhino, an elephant..etc.. They moved their arms and legs and came with little weapons. I had these little battles with alliances and treaties and double-crossnig and everything. Ah, memories.

Leave it to me to post something from the 80's. Anyhow here they are: Battle Beasts!

I never had any as a kid, but I vaguely remember seeing them in TV commercials. I was more into Transformers, G.I. Joes, and those 8-10 inch wrestling figures.

Jordan as B.J. Hunnicut

What's alarming is that BJ is probably my closest M*A*S*H personality match. Though I've used several Winchesterisms in conversation over the years, so maybe I'm an unholy amalgam.

If we get to choose any TV character, though, I call Dietrich from Barney Miller.

Let me rephrase: the drum will be at Tuesday's game.
_Jobu - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 06:26 PM EDT (#46193) #
I am thrilled the drum will be at Tuesday's game, I think that game the drum will be needed more than any game this season. The Jays are retunring home after a "losing" road trip, playing a hot team that most casual fans will assume are still awful. With The Hentgen on the mound and a dull Tuesday night, attendance might be pretty awful tomorrow. Thank heavens for that drum to get some life into the place, I shudder to think of a game like tomorrow's without it.

I'm getting sick of that wretched team!

And oh so close, Vern missed a homer by inches. Just a bit out in front.
