With the contraction spectre coming back in a couple years, Jays fans need to find a way to make the Skydome experience fun and entertaining for other fans, so they'll come back more often, and so MLB gets rid of some other team instead of our Blue Birds.

One way to create noise in the Skydome is with those blue horns. But those have been maligned as being annoying and "non inclusive". So let's come up with things which are inclusive, such as the "Moooookie" chants from the 1980's. Named For Hank's crew came up with an idea yesterday:

If you go in expecting a blowout and sit on your hands and shut your mouth, you'll get what you expected. Give them some support, something they can see and hear, give them some love and show them that we believe in them.

To that end, we were wracking our brains last night for things to do that could hopefully catch on. The best one was the O-Dog call -- when O-Dog comes up to bat, after he's been announced and the music dies down and the Dome reverts to Library-during-exams sound level, shout OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH until you run out of breath. Get your section doing it. When he gets on base, do it again. When he makes a great play in the field, do it again. We had our section doing it, especially in the ninth, and it was a blast. It's fun, it's easy, it's inclusive.

OHHHHHHHHH is great for the O-Dog. But what about Hinske, Woody, and Cash? Can we come up with something for them? The future of professional baseball in Toronto could be counting on it. Honestly, Rochester deserves a major league team more right now than Toronto does.

A couple of different people have talked about some kind of Volkswagen reference for Vernon Wells. Maybe a "vroom"?

It has to be something so exceptionally simple that it can be understood when thousands of people do it at the same time, but also plainly and simply self-explanatory.

So maybe a "Veeeeeeeeeeeeeee-DUB"?

Or maybe a rousing chorus of Deep In The Heart of Texas? ;)

Rember that song "Dub be good to me". I think that will the current U.S. President, everyone would understand a

"DubYEAH" chant.

In Houston they sing the Ole Ole Ole Ole song, except they use Yao Ming's name instead.
(Yao Miiiiing Yao Ming Yao Ming Yao Miiiiing
Yaaaooo Miiiing, Yao Ming
Yao Miiiiing Yao Ming Yao Ming Yao Miiiiing
Yaaaooo Ming, Yao Ming)

Could that be turned into something for the Jays?
I think it's kind of fun when I hear them singing it at the Rockets games.

That's a riot!

What songs can we adapt for what players?

This was in the other thread, but Robert's absolutely right about the attendance this year. It's actually been quite a bit better than last year.

In the 7 games that weren't the opener or a $2 game, the Jays had a total attendance of 110,008. In the first 7 non-opener/non $2 games last year, the Jays had an attendance of 98,778. An 11% increase is nothing to sneeze at.

Still, though, the Jays will have trouble breaking the 2 million mark this year if we don't get more enthuiasm in the Dome. Obviously the slow start will really make it difficult to generate that enthuiasm, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

In Houston they sing the Ole Ole Ole Ole song, except they use Yao Ming's name instead. Could that be turned into something for the Jays?

Ver-Nen, Ver-Nen, Ver-Nen. I like it!

The song thing is a good idea, but there's a fine line there. The White Sox play:
"ooooohhhhh eeeee ohh....Maaaaagglio" everytime he's at bat.
It gets mighty annoying (although perhaps only because I'm not a Sox fan).

But they also play "Jose Jose Jose" (Valentin) for the Ole Ole Ole song like Houston does for Yao Ming, and it's pretty fun.

ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYY is an obvious one for use when a big strikeout or double play is in order.

CAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRR-LOS (a la ARRRRR-GOS) might also be usable, but could be heard as derisive.

The Cat has been fired up lately. What can we do for the Cat?

I like the Vernon-Ole song.
_Moffatt - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 12:10 PM EDT (#67281) #
Everyone should start Meowing.

Okay, that's lame.

Do you know that song "Jimmy Mack" by Martha & The Vandellas? Frankie Cat makes a good replacement for Jimmy Mack. Just have to change the chorus of:

Jimmy, Jimmy, oh Jimmy Mack, when are you coming back?
_Dr. Zarco - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 12:11 PM EDT (#67282) #
Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer just came on my Winamp, and "Aaaaaaaooooo, Living on a Prayer" translates nicely into "aaaaahhhhooooo, Frank Cat-a-la-not-to" It's just a great song too. It'd be a fun one to always cheer/have in your head at games.

If you want to change the lyrics of a song, check out RhymeZone. It's great for finding rhyming words.

So I want to change

"oh Jimmy Mack, when are you coming back?"

to

"Oh Frankie Cat, [six syllables that rhyme with back]"

So I get stuff like track, whack, black, but even more impressive stuff like:

Oh Frankie Cat, Anxiety Attack
Oh Frankie Cat, The Angle of Attack
Oh Frankie Cat, A Political Hack

Oldies are good because they're sort of ingrained into the consciousness, y'know?

The only problem with songs with lyrics that aren't the player's name over and over again is that you have to teach the crowd the words somehow.
_Moffatt - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 12:28 PM EDT (#67289) #
It'd be great to have a cheer/chant/whatever for every single player on the Jays. Once we get them all, we could even hand out sheets at the game telling fans who want to join us what the various chants/cheers are.
Named For Hank - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 12:29 PM EDT (#67290) #

So far we've got:

O-Dog: OHHHHHHHH
Vernon: Ole Ole Ole song
Cat: Jimmy Mac / Livin on a Prayer

We should be able to do something with "Woody". Seems straightfoward.
Named For Hank - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 12:35 PM EDT (#67293) #
I'll take you up on that, Craig.

Dunno if I'm sold on Jimmy Mack, but Livin' On a Prayer is just silly enough that it might work. Hard to get people in sync on that one!
_coliver - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 12:36 PM EDT (#67294) #
No one would have thought, 11 years ago, that the Jays would have such attendance issues. As you know, daily sellouts were the norm. Even before the move to the dome, the numbers at Exhibition Stadium were excellent from 1984-1989. From what I remember, I believe they led the AL in attendance in '87.

So despite what some say, SkyDome isn't the issue.

The Gord Ash "reign of terror" destroyed this organization. Did he do anything right?

Finally, as much as I respect and admire J.P., it is time to do some modifications to this "Moneyball" style of baseball. I almost fell off my chair with happiness when I saw O'Dog's sac bunt last nite.

I know that Richard Griffin is not a favorite of Batters Box Nation, but I wonder how much of his Saturday's article is, indeed, true.

It is time for the Jays to become more aggressive. I love this team, and and really hurts to see this.

Dunno if I'm sold on Jimmy Mack, but Livin' On a Prayer is just silly enough that it might work. Hard to get people in sync on that one!

It'd be better if we had something more simple than either of those. Just something fun to do with the name, like Ver-Nen, Ver-Nen, Ver-Nen.

Maybe the best approach is to find songs we can rip off like Ole Ole Ole, then see what name fits best with them.
_Dr. Zarco - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 12:41 PM EDT (#67296) #
Perhaps a "Welcome to the Hotel Eric Hinske!" to Hotel California? I'm just trying to plug in guys names to anything...this one doesn't quite roll off the tongue that well. It's actually kinda hard to come up with these. Negative cheers for the opponents are way easier, but I'm not in college anymore, so this isn't the place for 'em.

Blue Jays Cheer Guide v.0.1.

General Cheers:

1) "Go Jays Go!" Chanted repeatedly, whenever the Jays have runners on base. "Let's Go Blue Jays!" is a valid alternative.

2) Whenever a Jays pitcher has two strikes on a batter, a 'slow clap' is appropriate. This begins with a slow, rhythmic clap, speeding up as the pitcher prepares his pitch, reaching a peak speed just as the batter swings (and misses - strike 3!)

3) It is always appropriate to clap or sing along with the organ music, especially for the CHARGE! rally call.

4) ...

Player-Specific Cheers:

1) Orlando Hudson should be greeted and cheered with a prolonged OHHHHHHH!, for his nickname, O-Dog.

2) Roy "Doc" Halladay is a Cy Young award winner. Don't let them forget it. A chant of "Cy Young! Cy Young!" will let him know we know he's great.

3) Carlos Delgado, the best First Baseman in the league, deserves an MVP. He's sure Valuable to this team. Let him know what we think, chant "MVP! MVP!"

4) ...

Player Miscellany:

1) Reed Johnson can be cheered as "Sparky"
2) Frank Cattolonatto can be cheered as "Cat"
3) Greg Myers can be cheered as "Crash"
4) ...

Heckling:

If you feel comfortable heckling an opposing player, it's best to focus on a few specific players. Alternate between a mocking two-tone chant of their name (JEEEEE-ter, JEEEEEE-ter) and specific and creative heckles. Unoriginal heckles (You Suck!) will have little effect on vetran pros. Try to make a reference to a recent play the player has made. Also try giving horrible advice ("Steal Home!" "Steal Right Field!").

From what I remember, I believe they led the AL in attendance in '87.

Yep. The Jays have only finished worse than 10th overall in AL attendance 3 times in their history: 1981, 2002, and 2003 they finished 11th.

What player could be our Magglio Ordonez equivalent for:

Always was a big Brian Seltzer/Stray Cats fan ... here's the Stray Cat Strut, Toronto style:

Look at that F-Cat hittin' line drives
Three-hundred hittin' lefty since he arrived
Not a gold-glover but we don't care
He hustles, and we fuss here in the Cat's lair

F-cat hits, the Jays at bat
Catalanotto, he's all that
Gets sliders thrown at him by the pitchers, man
But he gets his hits however he can

It's true that the best ideas originate in the bathroom. While I was there just now, I thought about the "Hey! Ho! Let's go!" opening to the Ramones' Blitzkrieg Bop.

Another name we seem to have forgotten in our cheer making fun is Josh Phelps, having a one syllable first and last name. Perhaps he'd be a better choice than Dave Berg for the Ramones song. Josh! Phelps! Josh Phelps!

I also propose that the Rock and Roll Part 2 song be given to Kevin Cash, as Vernon already has a few cheers devoted to him. Kevin Caaa-ash... Kevin Cash!

David's suggestions that Josh Phelps be used with Blitzkrieg Bop and Kevin Cash go with R&RP2 are really good as well. I nominate those. The OHHHHHHH is perfect for O-Dog, so he doesn't need another song. MVP for Carlos and Cy Young for Halladay work really well too.

WARNING: THREAD HIJACK FOLLOWS...

Has anyone read Will Leitch's "Life as a Loser" columns? They're all really good, but one in particular struck a cord: "The Right Field Dad" might be the kind of fan I'd hate if I were cheering for the opposing team and I'd certainly consider him a loser anywhere else, but his kind play a valuable role at the ballpark. He's also the type of person far likelier to be found at Wrigley, Yankee Stadium or Fenway than at Skydome. COMN for the link.

I consider him a loser anywhere, triply so at the ballpark. His kind keep 80% of the other dads away. Baseball, for whatever reason, seems to attract these bozos in a way that hockey and basketball don't. Never figured out why.

good old UK style

Alex, how do the crowds know the words to all those great chants? It would be impossible to get North American fans up to that level of co-ordination. I miss the level of humour in the UK.

More than anything, they are just a painful reminder of how silent the Skydome is.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I doubt you'd even be able to hear the horns if the Skydome had the average amount of crowd noise.

de los Santos: O-E-O, VALERRR-I-O
Crash: I love that idea, and I was born in 1987, so I'm sure others would get the Queen reference.

_Sneeps - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 02:56 PM EDT (#67336) #
Here's my idea for a chant:

MAKE SOME NOISE!!! MAKE SOME NOISE!!! MAKE SOME NOISE!!!

and so on...

Whenever we get a 2 strike count on an opposing player, start making as much noise as possible.

Whenever we have a rally going, start making as much noise as possible.

Whenever we make a sweet play, cheer loudly.

Whenever a pitcher on the other team is struggling, get on him.

and so on...

Use The Beatles' Come Together after a walk: "Come to first base...right now...(player's name)"

What we really need is the Walk Cheer. Requirements:

Four Fans
Four Signs
The Walk Cheer, which I think should be (moronically but effectively) "WALK-WALK-WALK-WALK-WALK..."

The four signs could be just the letters W, A, L, and K or if you want to be really fancy, those letters superimposed over a baseball.

The idea is that after ball one, the "W" fan stands up and cheers and holds up his sign.

After ball two, the "W" and "A" fans do the same.

After ball three, "W", "A", and "L" fans cheer. (Optional : do the Walk Cheer after Ball Three)

After ball four, everybody does the Walk Cheer and the "W", "A", "L", and "K" guys all hold up their signs and go nuts.

In Philly, the guys are even more sophisticated - they have a "walk dance". After ball four, they walk (get it) out to the aisle and do a little "walk dance".

If they don't, we should. And if they do, we should. Way, way too funny.
_Sneeps - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 03:22 PM EDT (#67345) #
I still think that make some noise is the best possible chant for the fans of Skydome to hear.
_Christopher - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 03:27 PM EDT (#67346) #
I've always like the episode of Seinfeld where George compares starting a relationship with getting a jingle stuck in your head.

Cooooo...STAN-ZA!

It's cheap, but short of anything else, it could work for

Delgado
Reed Johnson
Ted Lilly
Greg Myers
Batista

I know the SkyDome plays the Addams family theme quite a bit, and it often gets on my nerves, but it could be a natural tie in for either Chris Gomez or Terry Adams.

To quote a chant that was first used in a classic episode of the Simpsons, "WE LIKE ROY..WE LIKE ROY..."

...and is a discussion going to open up for heckling chants?
_Dr. Zarco - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 03:57 PM EDT (#67348) #
I LOVE the w-a-l-k thing. Great stuff. Here's a dumb one (but a catchy tune). Speier's name is pronounced like Spy-er, which made me think (for no apparent reason) of Inspector Gadget. And it fits-"Do do do do do Inspector Speier, do do do do do DOO DOOO." Hehe, it's funny to type. The Go-Go Gadget ______ lines would be innumerable.

Hey guys, long time no see.

Can I put a request in to ban talk of the league contracting the Jays?

It seems this kind of talk is a self-fulfilling prophesy (see: the Expos). I don't want to read it. I don't want to think it.
Craig B - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 04:31 PM EDT (#67350) #
I love the idea of a "We Like Roy" chant. :)

Is the cheer club going to be down there tonight? The Dome will be silent.

Who was gonna be who would be the first to dance?
Who was gonna be who would be the first to kiss?
Under those Catalanottos

No, Eddie, NOOOOOO!!!!

Thomas, tonight I will be resting my poor, roughed up pipes in front of the TV. I will, however, be showing up possibly for Wednesday and definitely for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
_Donkit R.K. - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 05:46 PM EDT (#67354) #
I love the Inspector Gadget idea, the We Like Roy idea, and the Louie, Louie chants the best, but some other good ideas ahve been thrown out there too. Good work, boys!

Those songs will never catch on. We should concentrate on simpler things like ... clapping ... especially when there are two strikes and especially especially when there are 2 strikes, 2 outs.

I always hear people use OOHHHHH for delgaDOHHHHHHHHHHH!!! So, sorry o-dog fans, that one is taken.

as for : Roooooyyyy -- nop. I already hear: Let's Go Doc! Let's Go Doc! and I've heard "Dr. K" "Dr.K"
_George - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 06:00 PM EDT (#67356) #
"Dr. K" -- Oh, I love that one. Put it To that Dr. Who tune: "

"Dr. Kaaayyy-hey, Dr. K!"
_Mick - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 06:01 PM EDT (#67357) #
Not for Ligtenberg, but "Light My Fire" DOES work pretty well for:

Come on baby, Justin Speier ...
Craig B - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 06:01 PM EDT (#67358) #
Those songs will never catch on.

Then we'll sing them ourselves, because they entertain us. Trust me, if we're having fun, others will see the fun and say "hey, that's fun", and they'll join in. Maybe they won't sing our songs. Maybe they'll make up a new chant, or start clapping, or clap in time with a song, or WHATEVER.

Of course, I think you're right that clapping can be the best cheer in terms of getting the crowd going...
_Mick - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 06:02 PM EDT (#67359) #
I'd stay away from "Dr. K." The last stud Cy Young Award winner to go by that handle found a little thing called cocaine on his way (not) to Cooperstown.
robertdudek - Tuesday, May 04 2004 @ 06:51 PM EDT (#67360) #
At least with Tampa Bay, MLB has a legitimate argument about them needing a new stadium.

The point of the contraction gambit isn't to actually contract (its to get taxpayer funded stadia). Therefore, Selig knows that any pressure Congress might apply is going to melt away when they say - oh shucks - we're not going to contract.

There are 11 US-based minor league teams that would be axed if the Expos and Blue Jays were contracted. You're going to here from those states affected. In fact, one of the Pennsylvania REPS was up in arms at the prospect of Harrisburg losing their AA team.

Davey, if someone wants to use OHHHH for Delgado, more power to them. Same with Let's Go Doc. I can't hear 'em, which means they are not succeeding. We have power in numbers.

As for clapping, we already do the slow clap religiously.

I like the OHHH for O-Dog, and I think it fits better than for Delgado. It's fun, and we're gonna do it.

Roy Hall-a-day matches the tune to Joy to the World nicely.
Maybe after each strikeout.
Named For Hank - Wednesday, May 05 2004 @ 09:47 AM EDT (#67363) #
That's brilliant!

I was thinking about something silly we used to do. Okay, I lie, something silly that we still do: we try to sing along the words in the opening crawl of Star Wars to the theme music as the movie is playing. (It works especially well for Empire Strikes Back: It-was-a daaark tiiime for-the Rebellllllllion...)

Anyways, we could apply that to any music they play at the Dome: sing the name of the dooer-of-the-good-thing along to whatever celebration music they play.

ReeeeEEEEEEEED JOHNSON!

There you go.
I've been tinkering with some complete Roy Halladay = Joy to the World lyrics, just playing around with the wording.

It-was-a daaark tiiime for-the Rebellllllllion...

I like that.

"Davey, if someone wants to use OHHHH for Delgado, more power to them. Same with Let's Go Doc. I can't hear 'em, which means they are not succeeding. We have power in numbers."

I hear them around the plate and on the 1st base side by Delgado. Where do you guys sit?
_endos - Wednesday, May 05 2004 @ 10:11 PM EDT (#67367) #
Ok, this is the way to go.

Heckle Magglio Ordonez, of the Cicago WHite Sox.
Its the best chant in Skydome history. When Magglio is in right, or at the plate, let forth the calls of MAGGGLLLLLLLLLLIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Its fun for the whole family.
A couple of friends and I did it last year to great success, as we heard on the television (yes, even over Rob Faulds)
Anyhow, we might do it on saturday. Try to sit in the rigthfield 100's (or anywhere really) it applies to all White Sox visits really.

The Odawg chant was a good idea too.

_Brian - Thursday, May 06 2004 @ 12:35 PM EDT (#67369) #
What about using the Queen song "We Will Rock You" and it's foot-stomping and clapping.

It could be used for:

"He will he will walk you" for some opposing pitcher who needs to be distracted and to remind the Jays hitters that patience is a virtue.

Or it could be also used as " We will we will rock you" to encourage a batter who's hitting well to "hit one out."

Maybe someone else might have some ideas for this "crowd noise maker."

This is what happens when you think of those Calle Johannsens:

Tune: Don't Worry, Be Happy (Bobby McFerrin)
When you need to put runs on the board,
Send up the player that's adored.
Don't worry, here's Carlos
When you need to get on base,
Find the player you can't replace,
Don't worry, here's Carlos!
Don't worry, here's Carlos now!

Tune: Let's Talk about Sex (Salt 'n' Pepa)
Let's talk about Ted Lilly
Let's talk about a K in three
Let's talk about all the innings
and the winning we will see.
Let's talk about Ted...

Tune: Itchy and Scratchy theme (The Simpsons)
They hit, they smash
They hit and smash and hit
hit hit hit
smash smash smash
The Wells and Delgado Show

Tune: Everybody Have Fun Tonight (Wang Chung)
Everybody: Greg Zaun's at bat!

Tune: YMCA (The Village People)
Young man, you had the Prospectus curse,
I said, young man, there's no need for a nurse.
I said, young man, you'll get lots of hits
that ball will fly out of the yard.
...
It's fun to play ball with J - O - S - H
It's fun to play ball with J - O - S - H

Tune: If you're happy and you know it
If you're Myers and you're due up, grab a bat!
If you're Myers and you're due up, grab a bat!
If you're Myers and you're due up,
If you're Myers and you're due up,
If you're Myers and you're due up, grab a bat!
...
This can be tailored for circumstances:
If you're Myers and its 3-0, take (a walk, that pitch, etc)
If you're Myers and you know it, (hit a double, send one out)!
If you're Myers and you're on first, steal a base!
If you're Myers and Roy's pitching, call the curve!

Oh, there are limitless opportunities with this one!

I think I'll stick to my day job :-)

So what chants *are* being used at the games by bauxites right now, that the crowds are joining in with?
Mike D - Friday, May 07 2004 @ 04:36 PM EDT (#67372) #
Hey! Just came up with one.

Same tune as "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah":

Va-lerio de los San-tos,
Va-lerio de los San-tos.
Va-lerio de los San-tos,
And he will strike you out!
